We were talkiing in the office about pictures we had in our house as kids,

Often above the fire was the Haywain,
Edward Munches the scream
and Van Gogh’s sunflowers.

Mum used to rent them from the local library for six months at a time,
and then send them back when she was bored with them.

not bad for a manchester council house.

This sort of thing was very common, can anyone else recall any others??

The principle behind that, both on the part of your mum and the library/council, is really admirable.

'The Wings of Love' was massively popular.

Used to adorn many a suburban living room, complimented by the overflowing revolving ashtray on a stand!

Can you explain a bit more please as I'm not sure what you mean. Did the local library have framed prints you could rent out in the same way as books?

We used to have a huge painting on the landing all oranges and browns. Seem to recall it was a man bowing down to a maiden in the sun. Sofa was orange, green and brown as was the curtains and various other things. I have embraced it and now love orange, green and brown.

My parents had a brown dreylon three piece suite with a swivelling armchair cool bought from the posh department store in Ilford, Harrison Gibson in the mid '70s.
Loved it! hehe

Also remember there were lots of orange curtains going on.

They were never ones for pictures, so I was spared some of those horrors.

Some '70s stuff was and still is quite cool though. smile

We had a brown carpet with a white fluffy rug on it. I used the rug as a moon base for my space Lego.
cool

I can also remember a large painting of running horses, when none of the family have ever had any interest in horses!

3 Doilies on the sofa backs and plastic flowers everywhere. 2 different style wallpapers with a crappy border in between and horrible patterned carpets in green and orange.

Although I was born in the 80's so guessing the 70's stuff was just as naff.

A mate of mine recently bought the premises next to his offices to extend into. On the top floor was this fantastic 70s wallpaper

I've never seen that before...superb.

Im guessing the artist had never seen a Swan in real life as the next frames would have been the swan attempting to rip the man's tackle off before beating the women to death with its wings. Followed by a brief wiggle of the tail feathers and a return to serenity, which just a hint of implied extreme violance.

Ex-rower here. Beautiful creatures, but bloody hell they're aggressive.

Touch of ‘War of the Worlds’ going on, what with that looping neck.

Yes, they used to hire out pics. Our local one in Dagenham used to have a load of them adorning the tops of the bookshelves. Also did records and tapes

we had the :"Balinese Girl" by Tretchikoff, but that wasnt too uncommon. It was a bit odd though in hindsight, a slightly green woman hanging on a brown and orange swirly wall.....
