Hello all,

Long distance quiet cruiser. Yes E class but looks like a clocked taxi, 5 series so competent it's dull. Volvo S90 lovely inside but D4 seems woefully slow. Post 2012 Lexus GS seems to have gone nuts post covid, yes it's a hybrid but the money is mad and the interior utterly sterile.

ETA: Alfa Guilia, beautiful exterior, for what it is, specs generally look low, interior looks like they got change from £3.99. But, worth a thought?

The XF. The odd choice. But character. Character is fine if it doesn't mean constant repairs. Is the 2.0 derv reliable? The 3.0 seems to have far more grunt, but far more replacement engine needed, garish two tone leather, and 7ish year old cars won't have much of a useful warranty even if 3rd party.

Many (of the 2.0D) seem to be basic spec with few options. Portfolio seems to have a reasonable level of kit, but still rare to see someone having paid for a sunroof, or wide screen nav. Some seem to have rear heated seats, not all seem to hade a heated wheel. What's worth hunting down?

There was a facelift I think, 2017ish? Doesn't look like a lot of change, but again, worth finding one?

Thoughts and experience welcome. I suggested an A7 to the kid instead, the hatch being useful, but the SE seems floppy with naff seats, the S-Line typically devoid of suspension...

Do you have a preference for petrol or diesel? How many miles will you do a year?

I saw a CLS 220d today... Quite a nice looking thing to my eye and fits the above brief very well.

I actually prefer them in white or silver rather than this black

It's for my lad, and it's probably derv, much as it hurts us all, it will do 25+k pa and needs to be Euro 6.

A good shout, although the plastic binnacles on that dash looked old when they were new, and it's £30k to get one with the post 2018 "sad eyes" rear lights but a far more modern dash (hideous example, but the first I saw on AT https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202209089... pic 12 shows the updated layout, it's night and day).

My first suggestion was a post 2014 S class (I used to have one) as (I think) that was what got the digi-dash initially, before it/ similar was rolled out across most of the (bigger, at least) MB range. Alas, Covid pricing means the sort of thing I left go at 18k is now 26, despite being years older with many more miles on...

Yes I see what you're saying about the interior.

Might be worth getting the lad into one to see how he feels about it?

S90 wise look for the D5 as it'll have the go you're looking for:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202209290...

Rather than the A7 I'd go for the A8:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202209129...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202208279...

The JLR 3.0d is a decent engine & lots of people don't have issues (the first link will is a car with a 1 year AUC Warranty) also I'd be looking at the XJ:

Leftfield is the Infiniti Q70:

Do I take the absolute silence on the XF as an indication it really is a turkey?! hehe

He occasionally takes bikes out, and I think the X351 XJ can't take roof bars bc of the glass roof, nor a tow bar, or is that wrong?

Jamesbilluk has a late ish XJ and it looks peachy in bright red https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Not at all. I've got a 2008 XF SV8 and it's excellent.

The post 2015 one is the required one bc of needing a ulez compatible car and diesel, the first gen were defo great, but as the world moved on, did the XF, is the question, and if so is it reliable?

I would avoid the Ingenium diesel.

The XJ with the 3.0d is a great combination for big miles.

Do you need 4 doors? F12/13 6 series is a nice place to be for a long journey. They do also come in 4 door version.

Because?

And yes, 4 door, some weird thing to do with it meeting ruled for company mileage reimbursement…

There seems to be an awful lot of reliability issues feeding through the forums and online.

Does not the 3 litre diesel suffer from snapping crankshafts or was the story about the Jag diesel engine graveyard in Scotland a bit of an exaggeration ?

I think there was an issue with the XF, but possibly resolved after the facelift with there apparently being a locking tab to stop the bearings from spinning and blocking the oil holes, although I never really found any solid evidence of this.

Something rings a bell about it being Land Rover with that engine that had the real issue, possibly due to the DPF location but I can't remember.

I personally never came across anyone who had a crank issue with the XJ though, despite being the same engine.

I've had 2 XF's the 2.7d and a 3.0 S. Really liked the 2.7, but the 'S' was bloody lovely.

I'm currently looking to change my car and the XF (and XE) are sitting pretty high up on my list. I'm going petrol this time though, so probably the 3.0 v6.

Never owned one,but if I was thinking of a xf ,I'd get the xj. Looks like a huge step up and the 3.0 engine seems the most reliable

Oddly, "xtruss", 3/4 of the way down this 4 series readers ride thread suggests their 3.0 XF suffered this fate. Look for the grey Gran Coupe pic, it's below that.

Enormous though and no one has told me if it can or can't take a tow bar or roof bars- I don't think any of the 351's can, and where I'm sure there are alternatives, these early 20 somethings are obsessed with the cycling kit they have and are very reluctant to change.

There was another thread on here a few years ago in the Jag forum, which raised the point about the garage up in Scotland who presumably repaired them, having a stockpile of engines with this issue.

Hopefully it has been resolved as mentioned by ninjag above.

I have always fancied owning a Jag but have never quite had the nerve, although my son has a 2013 3.0 diesel XF that has done over 100k which he loves and so far seems to be ok.
