I have a little problemette....
i'm getting ready to change my current runabout (seat leon cupra R) for a roadster with a little bith of bite.

Looking to spend around £20k
so the dilemas...really didn't fancy a TT, porsches too expensive (911 preferred rather than the boxter), Z3' dated, ....and so on
has left me with the Z4 or a Tamora.

Z4 - love the looks outside, hate the BMW interior,
Tamora - pretty but not yet convinced, great interior, but v.scared of TVR reliability and saftey.

SO what are your thoughts on this? What things should I look out for and what would convince me this is the car for me?

Hornie... if you just test drive the Tamora your quickly realise that these cars are just in another league! value for money nothing comes close.. and you'll find yourself comparing them to supercars that cost in excess of 100k..

Hi

I had very similar worries before I bought a TVR.

Since I bought my TVR I have not been able to wipe the smile off my face. I have had no problems with my T350 and non of the things I was fearing have happened.

I think you should go for a test drive and your mind will be made up!

IMO....go for the Tamora.....a really sorted TVR that is loved by it's owners.

A few really excellent examples on the forum if you click on the profiles.

Have a look at Maddogs...........stunning......but then I'm a little biased to the colour...

I'd go for the Tamora.. cracking car, and if the bank manager agreed I'd probably have one now

Z4..? My old man tried one and bought a Boxster... think that says it all.

Wow, Leon Cupra R..? Fastest thing on the planet if you ask Mungo..

Where can you get a Tamora for 20K (or less)? If you can then there's no question - get it now!

I'd buck the trend and advise you think about something else. A budget Tamora (without a contingency fund) is a recipe for disaster IMHO, especially as a runaround. They need careful pampering (warming up properly etc) and you're likely to get a very early car for that sort of money which is likely to be less reliable/sorted than a later example....

My other car is an Ultima Canam... so I don't need supercar performance, but I also don't want tame and tooo practical.

I want something fun, funky and soft top- won't be used everyday, but far more than the ultima - also is a little more easy to slip into a car park (secured of course)

Does anyone have reliability issues with their Tamora?

apologies budget is 20-25k

Ignore DJC for some unknown reason he does not like the Tamora's. I would go for the Tamora, i bought new so can not comment on a second hand model but I know that they are great and if you can try and get a 2003/4 onwards one when the minor facelift came in.

I've got a Tamora and would certainly highly recommend it, but as you already have the Ultima and are looking for this as your second, reliable and trusty car, I think maybe you should go for the Z4 instead, or maybe a VX220 Turbo?

With any TVR, you are likely to have a few niggles that mean a few trips to the dealer, and if you are unlucky, you could get a Speed 6 engine that goes pop - one of the T350 owners on this board recently had that, but obviously there are plenty of people that haven't had it.

Z3M is fine, but not necessarily reliable - friend bought one recently, and it had MAJOR and VERY EXPENSIVE engine problems. I think the double vanos system can cause problems.

Have to say for raw edge and grin factor the Tamora has it
BUT
day to day - with a Ultima there for the need for nuts out driving Id probably have a VX220 turbo for reliablilty and car park fear factor!

Yellows not a bad colour is it?

Unknown? I think my reasons for not liking the Tam are rather well known

My choices would still be either a Griffith, Mk1 Elise or a 220Turbo.

To be honest, on a bumpy b-road, in the hands of most drivers, Mungo is probably right, and I've only got a standard leon cupra (180 bhp vs 225)

And I've also got a griff 500

Especially if you add it's a bit wet.

B

Edited to add, just read you ahd an ultima,

Try a griff 500, or Chim 500, lots of people do you them every day, lots of indy's/ specialist can service them relatively cheaper than a tam/tusc...

If you LOOK at the in gear performce stats, a 500, is quicker than a tam/tusc, HELL even a tusc s, sagaris, up to 100 (ie 2nd, 3rd, 4th 5th 20mph increments) which is more your real world driving, ie respond quickly without dropping a gear.

That said a cupra, cupra R if you want 4 seats and a boot, is a dammed good handling car, BUT their are also a number of newer hot hatches that are probably better buy now, if not susch a bargain new.

Yes, you think it's like driving a Mondeo 'cos it's soooo easy

Each new TVR that comes out seems to be easier to drive than the last one according to general views on here and in the motoring press - Tams were seen as a progression from the Tuscan - lot less scary, more predictable etc - and all the press at the time declared it to be the best Trev so far.

And now the Gristle has come out, all the reviewers say that it is the easiest and nicest TVR to drive so far, on which basis it must be like driving a Proton - I feel sorry for you!

The next one will be on a par with a Toyota Yaris!!!

The only other car to look at would be a Honda S2000 - pretty fast if a bit manic , no storage space , electric roof , and reliability? - It's a Honda . Apparently a bit slippery when wet though!

Do you want to swap for a week - you can have my Tamora and I'll take your Canam on Megahoon?

Now why didn't I suggest that?

Definitely recommend an S2000 - there are 2 storage cubbys inside, and some small door pockets, boot is ok. Engine is great, gearchange is the best, and you need to use it, I never had any problems in the wet, but a lot of people do seem to crash them. Roof is fantastic as it lowers and raises so quickly, and great heating system means you can easily drive top down in the winter.

When you're on an open road, and screaming the engine round to 9k rpm, it really is a great sports car.
