OP, couple of Q's...

How old is the car?

How much is the seller wanting to charge you?

Take the car into a different main dealer and it fails - 1 ball joint and excessively corroded brake lines on all 4 corners. Get told it'll be £1200 to fix.
Rusty brake lines, guessing it has to be a German car of some sort, I am going to go for a Mercedes?

... (the first thing I was annoyed about as they said at the time that a car sold with less than 6 months MOT would be done by them prior to sale - stupidly didn't think to check when we picked it up).
Another question - do you have this in writing?

Good guess - correct.

Car is 10 years old but only done 50k miles. I'm guessing the brake lines are just treated as a consumable so will be excluded in any warranty. What really grates is things which were flagged on an MOT, one of which was a "fix ASAP", a year ago have gone through a main dealer safety/health check 5 months ago.

Really should always check the previous mot’s before buying a car.

I really struggle to understand how Mercedes are incapable of making brake lines on a £30/£40/£50K car that don't even last 10 years. I have looked at lots of W204 C Class on eBay and when you check the MOT history it is not unusual to see advisories for rusty brake lines and rear subframes at 8 or 9 years old.

The brake lines on my 16 year old Renault are perfect, yet Mercedes are incapable of doing this.
