Now you say it I'm sure I used to buy it from Sainsbury's (or maybe Tesco?) many years ago.
Yeah I used to get it in Tesco. It was nice and strong. I can't remember when I saw it last though.UTH said:

Sainsbury's used to sell in similar themed but different pack/label for each variant, range of cheddars about 15 years back, Canadian, irish, mull of somewhere scottish, somerset and maybe one or 2 more, all of different characters and strengths, don't think they do anymore.
Canadian cheddar has a reputation for being strong (i think) (but of course that's just the type and level of maturity they commonly exported over here, as in Canada it come in all its variants), but i'm sure there's a British cheddar that ticks the same box's if you sample a few!

Waitrose sell a very good crystalline Cheddar cheese. Failing that try some of the Snowdonia Rock Star, very nice!
Thanks. I'm going to have to check those out I think. I know there will be British cheddars that are very similar to the Canadian one I remember, so a good starting point. Just buy British Cheddar
Why haul it from the other side of the world.
Oh
And read labels
There’s one I bought once states on labels something like “ contains cheese made in various countries “
From that I’m assuming it’s reconstituted.
Yet the branding was misleadingly English looking
McClellands extra strong is a good basic one that sounds like what you want . Made in Stranraer a great milk producing area.

I've been eating Sainsbury's Canadian Cheddar for over a decade. Or at least I was until around the time of Covid it vanished from the shelf and hasn't returned.
Nothing else like it.
