I'm due to be buying a new car at the weekend but this will be before I can sell the current one. Looking at various options such as temporary cover etc. but if I was to take out a fresh policy, and therefor have no NCB initially, is there a chance I'd be able to then use my NCB when I sell the current car and get some money knocked off the initial price?

I did try phoning but the conversation was going round in circles.

I think you're over complicating this. Phone your current insurer and tell them the date you need to cover the new car from. Then ask them about a price for temporarily covering your old car.

This is often the best way.

But to answer your question that should be fine also.

I had this, and for mine I moved my existing cover with NCD to my new car and did a new temp cover for my old car until it went

Ask the meerkats for a quote with no NCD.
You might find it's cheaper to just start a new policy for the new car and let the old one run.
Works sometimes. Mostly for old gits like me I suspect.
Sometimes your existing insurer will rate your new chariot higher than a new insurer.

But be careful of keeping the old car insured in your name once it is sold.
You need to notify the insurers it's no longer yours and they may or may not charge you for cancelling the old insurance, it may just 'self cancel'.

Temporary cover is being quoted at £257 for 28 days cover...

Looks like the cheapest option by far is going to be a fresh policy on the new car. I'm hoping the saving grace is the cheapest comparehtemarket effort is also the same insurer (1st Central) so could make things easier.

I will try phoning them again but this harks back to my original question. I'll need to get a new policy with 0 NCB on it but when I sell the current steed, should I be able to transfer my 11 years NCB over after the new policy has started and get some money back?

Once you start a new policy you will not be able to then transfer your ncd over at a later date. You will either have to cancel the policy and take a new one out using your ncd or wait until the following year at renewal.

Not necessarily the case.

Ask your insurer OP.

Temporary cover when I used it is only really cheap when for a week or so sadly (I only needed a week).

in the past some insurers would mirror a no claims bonus to get a new policy. Perhaps ask for that?

I did mention that but it was someone who didn't have English as their first language, hence the going round in circles. Aviva did it for me when I first got a second car in 2014 which was nice.

Will try again tonight.

Ah no luck on mirroring the NCB. I'll go with them anyway as they're cheapest.

When you use a comparison site, they’ll asked you if you own or have access to another car. You can then input if you’ve got NCD on that vehicle, and many insurers will give you a suitable discount.

As has been said above 100% the best way is to get in touch with your current insurer as they can frequently just charge a nominal amount to cross-over cover for the time until the old car is sold.

The last time I did it a month cost something ridiculous like £50 & could easily be extended if I needed to.
