Oh noooooooooo.....

Is there still oil in the engine if you check the level ?

I'm taking a complete stab in the dark - pressure releif spring ?

(how long was the engine still running with zero pressure - the shorter the less chance of damage)

hopefully it is the relief valve. putting more oil in (worringly low level of oil in it) has helped. the light has gone out but pressue is still only about 10psi.

now face a low load for two hours etc.

They always seem to do that.

As a TVR owner you kind of get to know the system/procedure. Even when you say, the thing can't be fixed at the roadside & needs a low-loader, they send a man with a spanner first to try & fix it (& of course save costs). Then he scratches his head & agrees it needs a low-loader, which is what you told the controller an hour & a half before. The low-loader then takes another hour to arrive.

As I say, as a TVR owner you get to know these things.

Got home 30 mins ago

No complaints about the AA though. They were pretty efficient and took the car to Top Cats etc.

If the relief spring goes, does the car lose oil? There was bugger all in the car yet it was still running just fine.

No, when the relief spring goes it just means the relief valve opens and lets the oil take a shortcut round the oil pump without going through the engine. Lack of oil in the sump would account for the lack of pressure, the next puzzle is where did it go? Has it been a long time since the level was checked?

Don't know Pete, that's a bit of a conundrum currently.

Although I probably should have checked it more recently, I did check it a few weeks back and it was fine and hadn't drunk any since the last occasion. It's a bit weird.

Well it's in good hands at Topcats so no doubt you'll soon know the answer.

Has the temperature been running high, eg has it dissapeared into the water.

Now it's a good job your name's Petrol Ted, otherwise your checked oil "few weeks ago" comment would be coming in for some serious stick

It could also be an airlock, I've read somewhere that the Cerbera oil system needs to be primed under some circumstances. Perhaps the oil level has dropped below a critical level, this leads to low oil pressure.

Simon, yep, I had this symptom (no pressure, oil light on) last month after I changed the oil pressure releif valve spring and air entered the system. Just needed a reprime and all was well.

I'd feel pretty sure that the oil pressure spring has broken, and once replaced, all should be ok.
Checking oil levels is always difficult on the AJP....some say check cold, some say warm, some say with the dip-stick locked into position, and some say not locked.......
Also these engines vary quite considerably, in the amount of oil they burn/use...Im one of the more fortunate ones, who's car doesnt use hardly anything...but I do check it every week, or before a 'longish' run out...

FYI...my car starts from cold with oil pressure of about 65 psi at tick over, dropping to about 35-40 when warm....

Got home to Taunton in 90mins with my Speed 6, which is going rather well presently (touches head and then puts fingers in ears)

Oh b*gger Ted. I hope that it isn't a serious problem.

I'm guess this happened was at the roundabout just before the A303? I was following you when you did the u-turn and I would have turned round to check up on you but there wasn't anywhere safe to do so.

I then thought I saw you in my rear view, but I guess not
