Just got a letter from the parking company that does our local Tesco
Their infallible anpr system has issued a fine for being in the carpark for several hours except I wasn't. I either went to Tesco twice or just drove through the carpark as it joins 2 roads together and stops you waiting in traffic (everyone local does this)

Either way it's bks so any advice on what to do as I'm not paying a £70 fine

Try and work out why you've been fined and learn from the experience.

Check the signs - they should have a "no return within ___" that can catch you out if you've visited twice in fairly quick succession... If you have two (or more) cars, bear in mind that no return time and just use a different car!

If they're catching people using it as a ratrun then it could just be that they've begun enforcing it... Maybe ask around local Facebook groups etc and see if anyone else has been caught out?

Not an expert on getting off so I'll leave that alone... But the old line about prevention and cure is obviously relevant if you use and drive through here regularly.

But then what is the contravention of the terms of the car park here? You can't enter and leave without parking or using the shop? If so, what do they expect you to do if you stop, read the terms and find them unacceptable?

If it was the rat run scenario you would have not exceeded the 2 hours or whatever the max stay is. Maybe they filmed you going in am and again the other way pm without looking to see if there were any intermediate entry/exits filmed?

If you went twice and paid on a card just send them the statements / transaction IDs.

Happened to me several times in local Sainsburys for some reason

I was actually there genuinely it seems first time using the store the next time was using the parcel lockers
Dont have evidence of time for the shopping as Tesco pay plus doesn't give me it but the email receipt for my parcel drop off is 1 minute before the apparent exit time

Have a word with the store manager.

If your story stacks up they should be able to get it cancelled.

We got one of these from home base. Ignored it. Numerous demands sent over next two years, each time more threatening.

Ignored them. (Internet advice lol).

They stopped, eventually. But it was stressful.

A good start. If not, appeal the ticket using the info you have posted here and any evidence you have, along with the point that proof of entry and exit isn't proof of parking. Would also be good if the signage is inadequate (check on Google Street View if you can).

If it gets rejected, assuming the car park operator is a BPA member, appeal to POPLA.

Evidence of a shopping transaction at Tesco on that day plus the parcel drop-off receipt will be enough OP. Clearly suggests 2 separate trips.

Write to them saying "I was there at 11.00am (or whatever) buying groceries, see attached proof of in-store transaction, and then again at 4.00pm (or whenever) using the parcel lockers, see attached drop-off receipt

Are those type of fines in any way enforceable?

Our local Tesco says 3 hours free parking BUT then stay away for at least an hour. Others have a two hour ban.

As you say you went back for a pass through my guess is it is this area they are doing you on.

If so, as has been said, show the Tesco manager your receipts and they will (hopefully) cancel it for you, particularly if a first time offence.

They're not technically 'fines' only a council or a court can fine you, they're penalty charges. Still bunch of wkers if you ask me, having been on the receiving end once when they accused me of overstaying and showed photo evidence of me entering on 2 consecutive days, not entering and then leaving. A flurry of bailiff letters arrived in quick succession demanding several hundred each or court.
They got nowt from me. Legalised extortion.

As I said I'd actually gone back to use the parcel drop off facility.
There also isn't a don't return clause in the t&c.

Fair dos, does sound very unreasonable then.

Sounds like a stupid way to treat your customers.

Seems worthy of a £70 fine to me.

Sounds unlikely.
