My Old man has sold his SLK and put his private plate on retention whilst deciding what to buy next. The vehicle has been assigned the VRM that was on the car previously. The tax is due at the end of the month which the new owner will take out on transfer of ownership but the MOT certificate that was done a few weeks back has the private plate number on it.

When the new owner goes to tax the car the VRM on the MOT won't match the number displayed on the car, does this matter? I assumed the 'system' is cleaver enough to know about the plate change?

yeah don't worry about it. I did a plate change recently and it all updates by itself.

You can buy VED without any other documents than the V5c now. In t'old days, a DVLA office would stamp your MoT certificate to authorise the new reg number, but now it is more of a receipt than an actual certificate, they don't bother if you change the reg.

You can print off another MoT certificate showing the correct reg number if you want one from the DVLA database here:

https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

After entering the registration number and clicking on 'continue,' there is a link to 'download test certificates.' You'll need the V5c reference number, you can then view any old electronic MoT certificate in pdf format and print it off.
