So... I'm meant to be travelling to the Isle Of Man tomorrow afternoon (from Heysham), but there's a good chance that the ferry will be cancelled.

I'm currently in a hotel near Lancaster. If the ferry is cancelled tomorrow, I have two choices -

1. Cancel my day off and work from the hotel

2. Make the most of the day (as the weather looks good) and explore some local roads.

I don't know the area. Are there any good roads worth seeking out around Lancaster? Please don't recommend the Lakes - I have a wide car and hate stone walls wink

Many thanks.

Your a bit stuffed then. There are lots of brilliant roads over the Lancashire moors and interesting places to visit: Trough of Bowland, Ingleborough, Ribblehead viaduct to name but 3. All connected by great roads. However quite a lot of it is fairly narrow and deffo some dry stone walls. Some good pubs around for lunch as well. As long as it’s not a Ferrari you should chance your arm.
Bleak but beautiful in places.

Good weather in that part of the world is rare. I suggest you make the most
of it.

Normally it rains 300-330 days a year. Or feels like it does.

The back roads to Hawes aren't bad. The A685 from Tebay to Kirkby Stephen
is a surprisingly fast road.

Decent run out from Lancaster to Kirkby Lonsdale -> Sedbergh -> Garsdale -> Hawes -> Settle -> Ingleton and back to Lancaster. Lots of decent cafes and pubs along the way.

If you want fairly wide and and open I’d head up the M6 to J40 Penrith and do the A686 Hartside Pass towards Alston then take the B6277 to Middleton in Teesdale then the B6276 towards Brough.

I’d then head towards Tebay, perhaps stopping at the services on the M6 for a bite to eat, then jump on the M6 north to J39 Shap and take the A6 back to Kendal.

I’d head out of Kendal past the hospital and take the back roads to M6 J36. You could take the back roads through Burton in Kendal and the Kellets back towards Lancaster but they’re not particularly good driving roads.

Thanks very much for all the suggestions.

I should know by 7am if the Isle Of Man is on. If not - looks like you guys have named some great roads smile
