Following on from this thread (which is brilliant) https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Some answers are predictable but there are also a lot you could argue with, and that got me thinking. What would people have answered to:

Which cars do you think have improved and/or look better with later models?

Here's a controversial one to start: Porsche Cayenne. The Mk1 was just hideous from every angle. Not sure whether the styling has got better or the shock has just worn off after 20 years, but the latest offerings look better.

As I put on the other thread - Porsche Panamera first gen vs the current gen. To my mind the current gen looks a lot better, internally and externally, especially the rear.

Completely agree with this. Dislike the first generation but actively want the current version.

The Panamera has certainly improved with age. I used to hate them but they look pretty good now.

The final Mondeo was a very coherent design let down by dynamic inferiority to its predecessor. The 2013 Fiesta facelift also hit the bullseye.

Obviously the Jaguar XF when it lost its initial surprised look....

Think I prefer the Mk1 Cayenne these days in all honesty - new one looks like every other SUV about minus the badge.

Current V60 is the sexiest estate on the market. The only letdown is the lack of 5 or 6-cylinder engines.

Wow that looks massively bland.

I think the current 911 actually looks really good. Shame it's quite bland to drive.

I think peak BMW was somewhere in the middle. Dare I say it, Bangle era. The grilles are silly now. But we said that then, so who knows?

I think the later Focuses look better than the 'New Edge' models or whatever nonsense Ford were spouting when the silly round models and the Ka popped up.

I also think the S3 Elise looks way better (and IS way better) than the earlier ones.

So all in all I'm expecting to be told I'm wrong across the board by the grumpy old facts of PH! laugh

At the very ordinary end of the market, these are the ones which stand out for me as having got better at the last release.

Pretty much every Peugeot
Renault Clio
Renault Captur
Vauxhall Astra
Vauxhall Corsa
Vauxhall Mokka
Toyota Corolla

With the exception of the Toyota, the interesting common factor in this is they are all French. The three Vauxhalls are only in the list because they are now rebadged Peugeots. The French manufacturers (other than Citroën who are still just churning out wierd stuff like they always have!!) seem to be on a bit of a roll at the minute.

I'd agree that PSA have really got their act together, and the PSA Opel/Vauxhalls are a massive leap over the utter turds GM Europe were crimping off into the rental fleets. The most stark example of this is the previous Mokka, a truly dire car in every way, and the current one which is perfectly decent and quite attractive for dross.

The Jaguar XJ that has just gone off sale is a much better looking car than the pastiche of a 60s car they were flogging for a couple of decades before.

Agree with that too. Having owned both it's also a much better car.

Contemporary design appeals to current taste shock horror.
Give it 20 years and you will be holding up today's models as examples of gopping design.
10 years later they will be classics.

Indeed it does. Certainly the Peugeot 508 SW is a super model in comparison.

Agree 100% in this. They really sorted out that ungainly rear quarter / haunches very well eventually.

It’s not an excellently proportioned car.

Lambo, so far, keep getting better with all their models.

It’s odd…. This seems much harder than the prefer previous model thread but didn’t think it would be!

The new Audi Q3 which came out in late 2018 was a massive improvement on the original which came out in 2011 and was still being sold in 2018 looking like something that belonged in a museum. The new one was widely felt to be a “baby Q8” and had a very modern vibe. Unfortunately, the quality of materials used in the interior was cheap and nasty, but engineering and image wise, it was far superior to the old one.
