My son got a letter from the local police this week after having been caught speeding by the local speed-watch mafia. He has no real issue with it; but at 4.50am in the morning - give me strength!!!

Why would they be out at that time, unless they're fed up with some boy racer taking the absolute piss at night?

Maybe he should stick to the speed limit in future.

And on say this as someone with points on thier licence, so don't think I'm suggesting that the early hours of the morning is anything other than an intriguing time for them to be out.

Was it his regular commute?

Community suggests taking the p1 SS in a built up area, anyway, just a warning.

According to my wife, wishing the wker that drove past our home at 2 am in 2nd gear at 7000 rpm, with what could be open pipes, a short trip into a tree, isn't very charitable.

On a regular basis.

Does your son drive the same route every working day? Is the car a little on the loud side? Could be they have a regular offender and your son just got caught up in that.

I say this, as l used to live in a village, the local café had a baker, every morning he would fire up his Subaru WRX complete with canon at 02:00 a.m. for his 2 minute commute to work.

Why is it nonsense, particulalry if your son isn't bothered by it? Sounds like a tap on the shoulder reminding him that speeding is not dependent on time of day. Perhaps he will think more carefully next time, he has avoided points here hasn't he? Take the win.

The first speed awareness course many years ago I did was for being caught pre 5am on an industrial estate (Team Valley). I was caught doing 35 in a 30 (IIRC) in a very boring totally standard megane.

It was a one off trip to collect a parcel as soon as the depot opened.

I was absolutely in the wrong but I’m still amazed they bother having officers at such places at those times of the day, but it does happen.

I doubt someone has got out of their bed at 4.50am in an effort to catch drivers in the middle of the night for no reason.

I get the feeling that your son more than likely drew attention to himself.

And why is there a pack of them? You only need two, one to hold the gun/set up the smiley frowny face and the other to take the reg number down.

a. Don't worry about it.
b. Can't your son type his own posts?

FYO - he was speeding by by very little (37 in a 30), he's well aware that there's no fine/points and he's 39 with a Passat estate, with a dog in the back going to work and in the middle of Stroud, Glos.

He's not all all fussed about the letter, the point of the post is that some busybody's up before 5.00am zapping motorists.

37 in a 30 suggests an indicated 40mph.

If the device is calibrated.

Personally I’d just ignore it and move on. Wasn’t through roadworks by any chance was it? Or on a diversionary route?

Whenever they shut the A14 near me there’s always cameras looking for lorries speeding through diversions.

They are hardly busybodies when they are looking after their own village as they are concerned about speeding drivers.

Why are you trying hard to make it sound like it is the residents that are the problem?

Maybe he could not speed in residential areas.

Just a thought.
