My dad has put a deposit down on a car at the other end of the country and has asked me to collect it with my Hilux and trailer.

The car is pretty valuable (~£60K) compared to the stuff I usually trailer around so I wondered if the standard fully comprehensive policy will cover it whilst it's on the trailer.

I'll probably get him to check in the morning but guessed this scenario must crop up quite often so someone might know?

Ask the relevant insurance company.
Anything else is guesswork - which might turn out to be expensive if something goes wrong.

As I said in my final paragraph I will but thought someone would likely have experience of the same scenario in the meantime.

Horse riders using trailers need to have the trailer and its load insured separately so I would think its the same for what you propose

I wouldn't expect it would be covered on your policy, but would expect it to be covered on a trailer when insured on it's own policy, just my opinion.

Loads are generally insured separately - I presume you don't normally insure what you are carrying.

The policy on the vehicle will specifically cover it when being driven by certain people or when parked, it if covers it while being transported . . . read the policy or ask the insurer.

Yep it was the policy on the vehicle being transported that I was hoping would cover it.

He's asked the question and whoever he spoke to didn't know and is apparently phoning him back...

You'd imagine the scenario was common enough that they'd have an easy answer!

I didn't even know a horse could pull a trailer. But I guess if it can pull a buggy with a couple of people, a trailer would be no issue! Maybe even a small caravan?

Eh? Am I missing something? What do think happened before lorries were a thing? Never seen a gypsy caravan?

Anyway, back on topic, the insurance company eventually confirmed that it was fully covered while being transported so all good in the end.

We've always had cars. Haven't you seen The Flintstones?

I can't see why your Dad's Comprehensive policy wouldn't cover it on a trailer, but with that sort of value I'd still ask the insurer the question!

When I had my truck a PHer asked me to move his Aston. My insurance company had asked me just to tell them if I was carrying anything unusually valuable. I phoned, they asked what it was worth, I said about £200,000 and the phone went quiet. By unusually valuable they meant around £25,000. They wouldn't do it. I phoned the owner and he thanked me for being straight with him. He rang back half an hour later and said his insurance would cover it no problem.

Long story short, the car should be covered.

Ah, yes, I see what I've done. Not read the thread thoroughly. Sorry, newby mistake.

To bring this to a close, we went down for it a few days ago and all went fine. I was slightly surprised that the insurers didn't have a standard answer to give out but they did eventually confirm that it was fine.

Glad it went well for you.
For those reading this, my car insurance covers this situation, so long as I don't leave the car on the trailer overnight..
I would also be careful to keep an eye on the trailer when parked at motorway servies etc.
Very easy to nick the trailer complete with car on top.
