Premium Bonds when kids turn 16 question

Had some bonds in my sons name and randomly got a cheque in his name in the post the other day. (they normally just pay electronically) I log on and can't see his holding anymore. After calling them, it was explained that because he turned 16 last month, he now needs to manage them, but we don't know his NS&i number, why would I because they were under my account? I was told I would need to fill in a tracing form for lost bonds and then post it, and send another form to allow management of them online.

Pretty annoying that the gave no warning about this and if we needed that cash urgently, it would be a real issue.

Annoying but tracing process is fairly straight forward, I did it around 5 years ago. Was issued with my bond numbers within 4 weeks or so.

I got caught by this as well and was complicated because we had also moved so they wanted to send the letter to the old address! I had to write to them asking for the number and also explaining we moved. Didn’t take too long in the end, but was still a pain.

Won’t make the same mistake again, although got a couple of years before the next one turns 16.
