What RC do I want?

Looking for recommendations from the wise ones amongst you all, I'll tell you what I am after and hopefully you can point me in the right direction.
Had a Tamiya Monster Beetle as a kid which started my love, more recently had a Vaterra Glamis Uno which was excellent but I've somehow broken. I can't seem to get the controller and the car to communicate any more
It was fast enough, rugged and happy to be thrashed anywhere, jumped etc.
I bought an HPI E30 thing, used it once and it hasn't been out of the box since.
I want something fast, tough, and capable of being used on all terrains, fields, woods, sand, mud etc.
I prefer scale looks rather than something which looks like a shrunken monster truck.
I'd quite like a kit to build rather than something ready to run but this isn't essential.
Budget wise it ought to be under £500, I'm terrible for budget creep and keep looking at those Losi Baja trucks
