£10k Estate - 320D or C220?

I'm currently running an E91 320D. It had a rebuilt engine in 2020 (camchain) and the starter motor failed last week. It is booked it to get some rusty subframe brackets replaced next week.
I think it's time to move it on, and anyway, I've had it for over 6 years, so I fancy changing it.
It's also time for an auto after only driving manuals. An Audi A4 or A6 isn't an option as I don't want a multitronic. I think S-Tronics are out of range.
I think another 320D is on the cards but maybe a 2014-15 F31 Touring.
Or a Merc C220 Estate (new shape). I've had one as a hire car with work a couple of times as well as the new Insignia which I liked (but aren't cheap enough yet).
Peugeot 308/508 are out as autos aren't rated highly.
Maybe a Passat? But they are big things.
I'll have about £10k to splurge on the right car. Low RFL is also important.

I had an F31 320D Efficient Dynamics and, whilst certainly not a fun vehicle, I really couldn't fault it as the work horse that I used it for. My mileage was 20-25k/year, it did everything I needed it to do very well, the iDrive infotainment system was the least frustrating of any systems I've had in any car and that has to be worth something when you're spending a lot of time in the car. It did the estate car thing very well, being loaded up for tip trips, dog adventures and also being nice to reverse , open the boot and sit in the back watching a sunset. I struggled to get below 60mpg in it and aside from general servicing it needed nothing.
Whilst the ED version was very efficient, I did find it frustrating that the accelerator was very, very deadened and the heated seats were capped at a much lower temperature. Both of these could be overcome by switching from Eco Pro to Standard or Sport driving modes but the car would always start in Eco Pro and I found the acceleration to be really quite hazardous when pulling out at busy junctions to tended to always switch to Standard.
I've seen ZX10 post some good comments regarding the Merc diesels of this age so I imagine they're fairly bulletproof but the interior and infotaintment system on that generation of Merc is a no-go for me.

I'd agree strongly on the infotainment. The hire care I had frustrated me, I just left it as I couldn't get my head around the sat nav!. My partner has a 220D Coupe which I love to drive, but that always starts in Normal driving, not Eco.
My E91 is the 177HP, so I wouldn't want to go much lower in HP.

The thing is to get a BMW/Mercedes (both are good cars although I'd go for the Mercedes out of the two) if you can live without the estate you'll get the hatch Insignia which has a very spacious boot for nearer your 10k.Maybe another year for the Insignia to bring it down? Not the best looker though in estate form.

The interior on the F30 3 series isn't great, Mercs are a step up in interior.
I went from F30 330d to W204 C63 and the interior in the W204 is nicer in my view. Albeit the C63 has amazing seats that the 220 wouldn't but even setting that aside I prefer the interior on the Mercs.
The F30 is incredibly fuel efficient though, I had a manual F30 320d company car and it never did less than 55mpg over a tank and was 65+ on the motorway.
