Hi,

Currently looking at getting into a 720s, most likely an earlier edition (2017/2018) - but one I've got my eye on has Gorilla Glass. I love the look of these and the extra light it provides in the cab, but have heard about the potential for cracking.

The car I'm looking at suffered from it and had a replacement during the summer.

My question is, is this something that tends to be 'fixed' once it's been replaced or is it actually more likely to re-occur if it's happened previously, regardless of it being replaced?

Love to hear about your experiences!

Matt

Pretty sure I've read about repeat breakages on here so believe it's a re-occurring issue, with poor fitting possibly a contributing factor to that happening more frequently.

They did an update, which is essentially slightly smaller glass and bigger rubber seal, that said they can still crack but less common, I heard there is a Perspex replacement in development but not sure if thats out yet or not. cars without it are way darker inside though

I wouldn't buy a coupe without it. IME McLaren are surprisingly accommodating when it comes to out of warranty replacement.

A pal just got this done through his insurance £115 glass cover excess. McLaren quoting 6k plus fitting..

Insurer treats as impact damage rather than inherent fault?

If it's broken once it will break again. Underlying issue is usually poor alignment of the door so stress is created on closure.

Personally, I'd avoid

Not correct, but if you have personal experience then good to share it.

See the above post about the rectification that has been done

Some are fine and others break/crack. Mine cracked due to stone damage but got both replaced through my glass cover on the insurance. Mclaren main dealer price was £7135

Fairly sure a repaired/replaced screen does not fix the issue long term - read a few stories of repeat breakages on here

If it was a like for like replacement then maybe that would be correct but it isn't - McLaren have revised the part and the glass is now smaller and there's a much wider (rubber?) frame it sits in. I've not personally seen a single report of the new design cracking other than from external damage - but of course absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence...
