Thought it was about time I started a thread, never done a build thread before so here goes.

I was lucky enough to purchase the car off Barry @ BMR last year and have since then chipped away slowly to further enhance what I believe to be an awesome build done by Barry.

Sadly I am no mechanic so have to rely on specialists so enhancements can and will be slow at times I will update the thread as and when possible.

Below is a link to the original thread.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

And a picture from the day it was collected.

Baffles me why BMW didn't just do it themselves.

So right.

That's fantastic. thumbup

As others have already said it seems crazy BMW didn't make it, or the E46 M3 Touring either.

Please let us know how you get on with it!

I fail,to see how you can ‘enhance’ what Barry has done.

There are quite a few of these cars around the world now aside from BMW’s prototype, and yours is one of at least two in the UK.

Was my first thought too, i'd fancied buying it and preserving it as was whilst giving it some 'use as intended' treatment, however the car wasn't advertised publicly.

Thanks for updating us OP and look forward to future updates cool

E39 M5 Touring? Sorry, pornography isn't permitted on PH.
As has been said, why on earth didn't BMW make this.

There is still enhancements that I’d like to make, for personal taste reasons and to appease my mild OCD.

Interior Retrim
Various aged trims
Detail
Redo the alloys
Cats
Maybe a new tailgate
Baris upgrade

Ofc, that's all reasonable-- after all, Barry used a donor vehicle so it stands to reason that some titivation is required. I'm keen to know how much you value this car at, not necessarily expecting an answer.

Not sure on a value but my titivation will cost me near £10k. Much like my other M5 I’m beyond the value vs spend, as the pleasure of owning it outweighs the financial common sense. My E61 M5 has cost me in excess of £15k in maintenance in 5 years yet I enjoy driving it enough that again common sense has gone out the window.

Any idea where you'll get to retrim the interior?

Makes my skin crawl when you see a classic that has been retrimmed with that smooth/waxy leather that looks like vinyl and stretches/sags after 6 months.. hurl

Yes there is the very early stages of rust coming through quite small but that’s just what I can see without removing anything. They all rust sadly.

I know what you mean about the waxy leather, having seen to a few hide suppliers and multiple reupholster’s I have gone with Bespoke, the retrim is actually almost complete just some small bits left before it’s classed as being complete.

Pic below.

That looks excellent, and very much in keeping with the exterior colour.

Looking forward to seeing your further progress - enjoy it!
