It just seems to flop around in the aperture, leaving large gaps when I'm driving

No, that's all you get !

Leather should be big enough to stay tucked in.

It may have revolved - try turning it around 180 degrees

That is supposed to be tucked under and glued in place

I've had 3 x Chimaera and a Griff, and I've never known it to be glued down. It has to be able to move when gearshifts are made. It does appear to be a be too short though, somebody skimping on leather maybe?

I replaced the gaiter in mine to an actual leather one as the original vinyl was too stiff and failing apart. The leather one was much softer and fitted better. I think it just off ebay although they seem quite pricey now.
