What’s more Superb than a Superb?

It’s nearly time.

I’ve been waking up I’m a sweat, dry mouthed and tense for a while now.

Last time I bottled it. I searched and test drove and discussed and then found myself saying, “Just give me the latest version of the one I’ve got.

Yes since 2012 I’ve been driving Skoda Superb Estates, the latest a 280bhp 4x4 version.

I tow (occasionally) and have two kids who keep getting taller, and a wife who keeps buying stuff that needs picking up or moving about, so an estate makes sense. Plus my dad had a Hillman Super Minx estate when I was in short trousers and estates, especially quick ones, just speak to me.

So now it’s that time to chop in the 2018 version and look to the future. I need a unit that can tow a car to the track, with a spare set of wheels and 5 Jerry cans onboard, plus tools and kits.
I’m thinking extreme weather will be more of a thing , so all wheel drive is a box to tick. It will only do about 8000 miles a year (an electric run around will do the short hop journeys) so most of its use will be out of town blasts. It doesn’t need to be the sharpest knife in the box (the Atom is sharp enough), but it must have decent rear leg room as I do actually quite like my children.

Budget - up to £65k (ish).

Thoughts? Or should I just fart another L&K Superb Combi in black?

Range Rover - I'd have a very late 4.4TDV8 L322 with a bundle of cash spare for a warranty. You could also get a very snazzy supercharged L405.

If you regularly have 3 in the back then an SUV's added height tends to make the transmission tunnel less intrusive for the centre passenger.
If not then it's a matter of whether you prefer the ride height of an SUV relative to an estate.

Also do have an absolute requirement for 2 cars?
If not then a PHEV cover the electric town driving as well as the long distance stuff?

Considering changing from a LR Freelander 2 to a Superb 4x4 estate for better economy. I'm guessing it would be a decent tow car? Have a twin axle Swift caravan so still need something with decent capability.

Nah, definitely not. The V90 may have a more 'upmarket' cabin but the Superb is a better car in every other respect, particularly to drive.

The V90CC I had rode superb (pun intended) the combination of 2 inches of extra ride height and 18 in wheels helped. It was no sports car, but for a long journey it was so cosseting.

I've had an octavia, so imagine the superb is good, and i also like my estates, but if I was in the market to spend 65k on a car, I'd be hoping for something a lot more special!

If you’ve driven a current v90 and came to that conclusion then I’d be surprised. Hugely comfortable car, notch above superb - just read Clarkson’s review of the v90cc
