Ferrari engineer and designer Mauro Forghieri has passed at the age of 87. He was as capable an aerodynamicist as he was an an engine designer, and was the brains behind the 312 series of F1 cars that collected 4 WCCs and 3 WDCs.

An amazingly unassuming man, he was remarkably still working as a pundit for F1 on Italian TV into his '80's.

Hopefully he'll be raising a glass of Bonarda with Niki Lauda tonight.

All my favourite F1 Ferraris came out in his era - with the exception of the F189.

From the “palace revolution” to the death of Enzo, he bookended some of the most motive time periods. My personal faves were the 60s sports prototypes.

I think anyone who was involved in the design of the chassis, gearbox, even engine had to be a bit special indeed.

You can’t imagine it happening now can you?

I think Niki said something like Mauro was like a: ‘a genius and madman’.

A big part of the Ferrari history from the 60’s, 70’s and into the 80’s.

That’s some legacy.

A nice obituary from Joe Saward:
https://joesaward.wordpress.com/2022/11/02/mauro-f...

“Forghieri was 26. He spent the next 25 years toiling for the Maranello team, designing cars and engines. He introduced a number of brilliant ideas and is best-remembered for his his 3-litre flat-12, which proved so successful in the hands of Niki Lauda.”
