Just received a NIP for doing 69 in a 70 in my VW Caravelle. It’s an MPV bodied Diesel car on the V5 however they (Hampshire Constabulary) are claiming it’s a commercial. Owned it for 10 years and have past many camera vans on dual carriageways at 70 and have never had an issue. Not even sure how they have managed to get as far as issuing the NIP. Can anyone advise how I should proceed? Many thanks in advance!

Help if I read the OP hehe usually it's one of the van-alike things. No idea if V5 says car.

Looks like a Transporter but classed as an MPV. As above been driving it for 10 years with no problems. Surely whatever system they use would have flagged it as such rather than what the operator (camera van) thinks it is?

Just send them a letter with all the info why they have incorrectly sent you a NIP and they should drop it. There’s a few templates in the vw t5/6 forums for overturning incorrectly issued speeding tickets.

Yes you would think so...

OP it's defo a speeding NIP is it? Not a 'Red X' or similar infringement?

For a kombi but the same applies. If you join the forum and read the post you will see the letter he got back from the issuing force aswell

Was just reading that, all seems straight forward enough. Just mystified how they could get as far as issuing the NIP as they must have retrieved my details from the DVLA in the first place!

Thanks guys!

Seems strange but it’s easy money for them if they send you a nip and you just pay it assuming you’re guilty of the misdemeanour. Luckily people are wising up and fighting it. Not that that will stop them.

Reading this with interest. I'm always mindful of lower limits for my Ford Ranger (as it weighs over 2.04 tonnes). You wouldn't think a Ranger is heavier than a Kombi would you?

I've an L200 and it's registered as commercial, but is under the weight limit unladen so subject to car limits. Its what I would use to argue my point and the bit which points out the definition is the important bit, rather than the V5 is useful.

Rangers are massive so I can well believe the weight.

Out of interest, does your V5 have the vehicle category as M1 or N1?

It's a bit crazy though that a lighter & smaller pick-up without the second row of seats also has the lower limits. (unless can select 4WD)

I love my Ranger cloud9

Caravelles are passenger carrying vehicles and are usually M1 and car limits would apply anyway which is why he’s probably surprised he got a ticket in the first place as the system should have flagged that up. Tickets are usually sent out to N1 commercial vehicles but these can be overturned too if you meet certain criteria.

I have two, both pre-2015, both 4wd Super Cab and both Dual Purpose.

Fantastic things!

Yes this is why I'm curious. If it says M1 and it was a fixed camera it's very odd.

If it was a camera van operator who just saw a "van" and then no-one checks vehicle categories that could also explain it.

If the V5 happens to say N1 (which I agree a Caravelle shouldn't) then it will come down to proving it's a Dual Purpose Vehicle, which might be tricky due to weight.
