New Ford Transit Trail is a 310hp 'adventure van'

Welcome to the most instagrammable thing you'll see this week

Who doesn’t love a Transit van, eh? The nation’s workhorse. The perfect getaway vehicle. Built in Britain for fifty years, and a global success story to rank alongside any of Ford’s best-selling cars. But despite only being offered there since 2013, North America is apparently in the process of developing an affection for big T to rival our own. Spurred on by the endlessly instagrammable ‘van-life’ movement, Ford has introduced the Transit Trail for 2023, and frankly it’s another one to add to the why-don’t-we-get-that automotive wishlist.

Okay, granted, it isn’t as high up that list as say, a Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing or a Nissan Z - but when the spec includes a 310hp 3.5-litre Ecoboost V6 (!) and 30.5-inch Goodyear all-terrain tyres, it’s hard not to feel a mild pang of Eurocentric jealousy. Who wouldn’t want to spend a few days bouncing around the wilderness in a tricked-out Transit capable of towing a three-tonne boat?

Somewhat disappointingly - and despite the manufacturer press pics - Ford won’t actually do all the tricking out for you in the factory when it comes to camper-style awesomeness. Instead, it calls the Trail an ‘upfit-ready adventure van’, which essentially means it will go to the trouble of providing the ‘drillable areas’ for more interesting kit - and, via an optional Upfitter Package, offers desirable add-ons like an auxiliary fuse panel and dual AGM batteries - but you’ll have to do the actual drilling and fitting yourself. Or get Ford Pro to do it post-build via its own network of installers.

Of course, in the States there’s now a massive aftermarket for this sort of stuff, and in that regard it’s hard to think of a better foundation for your home-away-from-home than the Transit Trail. Bearing in mind a Transit of similar proportions in this country makes do with a 105 or 130hp 2.0-litre diesel engine, you do wonder why the Trail needs a petrol V6 with more grunt than the forthcoming Euro-spec Ranger Raptor - but who are we to argue with the concept of speed mattering? The Ecoboost is mated to a 10-speed automatic and a five-mode intelligent all-wheel drive system.

Needless to say, four-wheel drive and go-anywhere ability aren't exactly a novelty in vans, but Ford has gone the extra yard with a 3.5-inch increase in ride height and a 2.75-inch wider track. Those Wrangler Workhorse tyres are fitted to 16-inch black alloys, and you also get a unique skid plate-style front bumper, splash guards, wheel arch cladding and liners, not to mention a black grille with integrated marker lamps.

Moreover, if you go for the high-roof, extended-length variant, Ford reckons the Transit will provide full standing room for someone 6ft 5in tall. And with a 14ft cargo floor, there’s plenty of room to lie down, too. “No matter the task at hand – delivering packages or enjoying life off the grid – customers can rely on their Transit to get the job done,” said Ted Cannis, Ford Pro CEO. “Our decades of experience in the motorhome industry and insights from the van-life community helped us design a vehicle that makes it easier for adventure seekers to start their next journey.” Not to a bank job hopefully - but evidently some of that same maverick Transit spirit lives on.

The new Transits really are a world apart from anything else, Merc, Vw ect.
Superb things to drive, ergonomics are spot on.
We've driven all over Europe in MrsD's swb day van from Norway , Poland and Greece. Its a2.2, 190hp, 6 speed box a great all day Autoroute cruiser .
This 3.5 petrol turbo 4x4 looks to be a good combination.
We have a 1990 Transit Countryman 4x4 in our collection. It's only the 2.5non turbo slogger with a max of a very noisy 72mph though..biggrin

Would need the diesel for reasonable MPG, otherwise, 4x4, rugged mini motorhome excellence!!

Big fan of Transits, still a good van despite its age now. I have the smaller Custom as a daily. It can’t hide its roots as a builder’s van with a bouncy ride on some roads when it isn’t fully loaded and the 130hp diesel is pretty vocal but punchy even mated to an auto.

I’ve been trying to convince a few people to get one over the almost ubiquitous Transporter.

i like this and think it looks better than that stupid and awful looking BMW.

I have owned 3 Ford vans all have been great, two were converted into small "Get away vehicles" !

Got to love a V6 in this would be great fun, i wonder how many will roll over smile

I’m making notes on the back of this napkin, no time to waste.
1: Divorce wife (she can’t stand motorhomes or caravans), retain custody of all 3 spaniels.
2: Sell house, pay mortgage.
3:Take equity, buy this van.
4:Become a nomad, never pay council tax again.
Hope this still makes sense to 7am tomorrow morning me getting up for work to pay the mortgage on a house neither of us like or particularly want that I will need to sell in order to release sufficient funds to put us both in a care home.

I think this 3.5L ecoboost engine is the one Guy Martin used in his for his 150mph challenge. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=J5YNeIuaqVY

From memory these were available in the US only and very tunable to about 700 hp. If I’m right, that’s potentially one fast van

It's obviously a silly engine, but the full sized Transits are great. I'd love to own one as a Kombi/Camper/sports transporter

Really like the sound of this. I've got a converted XLWB Sprinter and whilst that is brilliant (and spacious for tall people!) This would be a fun, silly thing to replace it with someday...

This. Although, realistically given the size of it and breakover angles, it won't be going far off the beaten track.

I had the 3.5 V6 in a Ford Explorer a couple of years ago while on holiday in LA. It was a great engine, drove well & was surprisingly economical.
Much to my surprise it was front wheel drive not 4 x 4.

Don’t really get the hype over this. It’s scarcely breaking new ground except possibly in fuel consumption.

You have been able to buy a jacked up 4WD Merc Sprinter for years and years. Much better engineered than any Transit. Whatever body size you want and with a 3L V6 diesel and auto box for good measure. Lots of go anywhere van conversions use this as a base.

At least with the Sprinter V6 you get a vaguely sensible engine. They do about 25 MPG and will cruise at 95MPH all day long if required (but not at the same time). A hard driven, jacked up V6 petrol transit will be lucky to beat 15MPG and I dread to think what the CO2 emissions would be like. They will almost certainly be speed limited to 100MPH so all the extra grunt will only be useful for getting up to a cruise speed a bit more quickly. Ok in the land of cheap fuel but not at our prices.

Explorer V6 is 310BHP so more than the Sprinter. Fuel consumption is quoted at 26MPG Highway so around 32.5 UK and will be better than a dirty diesel. As for better engineered not so sure, I hear of lots of issues with Sprinters. Look where Merc come in terms of JD Power type reviews
