People who don’t list cars correctly

This is a message to traders and regular people selling their cars.

Please list your car correctly especially traders.
Not only is it annoying for people searching a specific car “GR YARIS” being one in particular, but it also means your actually loosing the right type of customer viewing your ad.

Just searching a GR Yaris and there’s about 300 regular Yaris’s listed under GR. I’ll forgive regular people who might make a mistake and just assume this GR Yaris as being a Yaris, but come one traders… you should know better.

your GR examples may be mistakes but I reckon they’re deliberate and optimisation attempts to grab attention for lesser cars

I mean, I would put good money on it that many Porsche dealers deliberately list their high value PDK GT Porsches as “manual” even though they are clearly autos.

They do it because they hope someone who is looking for a mint PTS manual example will get tempted into one with the admittedly excellent auto - an example they wouldn’t have found if they hadn’t deliberately wrongly listed it as a manual.

It’s bloody annoying because by the time I’ve sifted through the 46 GT cars in the listings, perhaps 9 or so are genuine manuals

I think people do that on more common cars as scammers can use the plate to run an illegal car on the same plate (clone). My friend had it on a Vw from an advert.

Police told him that the scammers do it when a car is being sold as it can give them more time whilst paperwork changes hands and gets updated. I thought the same as you but it seems to be a thing.

On AT you can search Toyota > Yaris > GR Circuit, and you get the real deals.
Whereas on PH you go Toyota > GR Yaris, and get swamped with grannymobiles.
(Sorting price descending helps a bit tbh)

I think AT make you put the reg in and look up on their side, so cars overwhelmingly get categorised correctly.
Whereas PH you the seller have to go through and specify make and model manually. Since 'GR Yaris' appears above 'Yaris' in the list, one in three sellers seem to assume the 'GR' bit is irrelevant and select that.


IMHO it'd be worth PH investing a bit of effort making their classifieds more functional, catch up with the market leaders. However I'm a programmer not a businessman, so I tend to assume it's best to attempt to do things correctly rather than cheaply.

I also found this exciting rear wheel drive "GR Yaris" in the PH listings:

Definitely agree on the Manuals that aren't - like SMG BMWs. Does my head in!

And all the close up photos of things like the electric mirror switch, etc. when a photo under the bonnet or boot would be more useful.

You can always tell a trader pushing the limit on the price when it starts with a story "the xyz was launched in 1981 to critical acclaim, the 2.0 engine produces….."

Yeh never understood the manual thing myself either… it’s as if these sellers think people looking for manuals, would suddenly see an SMG, and go actually what I really wanted is an SMG, so I’ll just buy this one listed in the manual section, and not view the hundreds of correctly listed SMGs, in the autos sections.

If you’re a criminal looking to clone the plate on whatever car you’re using/just nicked, what’s easier; trawl the public roads and car parks all day long trying to find an exact copy to clone, or simply look one up using the filters on AutoTrader within 30 seconds?

It’s going to be the latter, which is why many people hide or obscure part of VRM when advertising/posting pics online, so that if anybody is out there looking to clone that same make/model/colour, a quick internet search isn’t going to lead them straight to that car.

I’d agree with this. Pistonheads classifieds used to always be my go to place and I have bought and sold on there in the past. However I don’t even bother looking. It’s hard to navigate on a phone. No idea if it is any better on a pc.

The auto trader app is quick and easy. It’s a shame as I like the ph forums and the classifieds are needed to pay for it.
