mmmmmuuuuggggghhhhhhhaaaahhhh

I am now the proud owner of a PORSCHE SPORTS EXHAUST!
(fitted by my local mechanic who looks after the Wife's Renault. Only problem being new top mounting brackets - old ones had to be reused as new ones had bolt hole in different location )

What can I say....... I know its sad and pathetic, but I am literally grinning from ear to ear every time I drive it!

At idle and at crusing speeds its not much different to the stock item - but, once you give it some revs!!!!!

This is what a 911 should sound like

I'm in exactly the sme boat, 800.....sounds fan-bloody-tastic (sorry Ted), doesn't it?!?!

Why, oh why, oh why (in Points Of View Ann Robinson voice) don't Porsche fit this exhaust as standard, ie., not a tickable option but standard fit?

I'm still grinning too, even the Mrs loves it!...worth every penny, IMHO

Because that's how Porsche make lots of money. You specify it as an option they fit it but you don't get the standard system back. It costs them no more to make than the standard system but they can fleece you for another grand or whatever. It's pure profit because they just fit it at build time.

It's a massive difference over the standard, that's one thing you're not prepared for!

I had a local Pug 205 raceteam put my PSE on. Drove a nice sounding Carrera into their unit and an hour later returned to them reversing the car out with shocked looks and broad grins.....amazing!!!!!

Can I ask, where did you get the PSE from and how much did you pay for it? I've the stock system on my 996 C4 and I really NEED it changing

Cheers

Got it from my local OPC - Hatfield. Very helpful, guy called Andrew also printed out Porsche fitting instructions.

The bad news is it was £1100 !!!
What is most irritating is that doing some research on Renntech forum, they appear to be the same price in the US - but in $ !!!
How on earth do Porsche justify that

I'm not going to pretend its worth it becase that is an awful lot of money for a pair of mufflers. But there are not a lot of other options if you want your 996 to sound the way it should do (IMHO).

Ah a chap near Hatfield, eh?....Grew up in WGC, so that used to be my local OPC too (Outlaws still live there, so kinda still is in a bizarre, uncomfortable, way!! ) Now live in depths of Kent

Agree, >£1000 is a lot to pay by anyones standards for a couple of lumps of stainless, but at least it makes the car more saleable, if not more valuable (cos it NEVER works like that ), as it's an OE item....Fabspeed is tempting, but then you hear the occassional person talk about resonance at certain speeds, and you KNOW Porsche would've been meticulous about testing that kind of thing...

Fellow Westfield owner was telling me the other week that a single silencer for his Westie was approx £500 now, so 2 x silencers, plus vacuum kit, plus electronics (loom/switch/relay, etc) for £963+VAT doesn't seem an order of magnetude out....wallet still hurtin', but grin making mouth ache now

BTW...arwebs, got mine from Design911, £945 plus £18 for switch +VAT, plus (for Gods-sake get 'em) 2 cat-pipe->Silencer clamps, about £8 each....if you've got an earlier 996, make sure you get the correct hanging brackets, the stud design does change on later models

Thanks for that.. Btw, what's a 2 cat pipe and why should I get one? (sorry to sound dumb) Also, I've heard that fitting the switch makes a simple job a very long one - is this right? If it is I'd be happy just to have it loud the whole time!

Oh, and as yet another Westfield owner, I had a custom repackable silencer together with custom manifold, all in stainless, made for £500 earlier in the year. Now that sounds fantastic!!!!

I had a Porsche sports exhaust fitted ont he guarantee it would sound better (£1100). it didnt really. So I got them to replace it with a cargraphics exhaust. Phenomenal. I was tempted by the switch (it is a gadget after all), but the 8 hours of labour to fix it was a tad expensive!!

£800 - 900 inc fitting. It gets better after a few weeks as the carbon settles. Sounds like my brothers turbo. great in tunnels!!

Strange that yours didn't sound that different Mike....sure the valves weren't shut?...have heard of at least one guy on RennList whose actuator rods were slightly damaged in transit, thus preventing them moving. Have to say, I was fully prepared for a "DOH!" moment when firing mine up, but was joyously relieved with the amount of noise....and I'm pretty cynical and negative when spending my own money!

Arwebs, yeah, Mick Cooper was who I was speaking with about the 'zorst cans. Ive got a TechCraft can on mine and i think he said it was them who he spoke with. He's in the process of mating his 6-spd seq Elite 'box to a Honda S2000 engine via one of his custom/one-off CF bellhousings!!...only Mick!...mind you, after a 30min chat, I'm now worried about my seq box, having only used it for 20miles...a long running thread on WSCC forum apparently, I daren't look!

BTW... the 2 x Catalytic converter (cat) pipes are the pipes that connect directly to the exhaust headers(manifolds), then cross over around the back of the engine then to the silencers, so RH bank connects to LH silencer and vice-versa
