Large estate car - budget circa 20k

Large estate car required for 2 dogs. Budget approx £18-23k.

The A6 has a very sloping back end reducing boot space. Don't want a 5 series.

Quite fancy an E class but £20k for a 2016 car feels strong money.

Don't seem to get much more for your money looking at a Passat/ Superb instead?

V90 looks a huge bus.

E Class and Superb are likely the best options if boot size is the priority. The Merc has that 'premium' feel to it, the Superb is typical VAG-family, but it's mostly personal preference. You'll get more car for your money with the Superb, and having owned one they really do live up to their name, so I would seriously consider a test drive even if it's only to rule it out.

Otherwise the Jag XF is worth a look, Mondeo is always a good shout in this segment, and the Volvo V90 is nice.

When I looked at this, I couldn't see past the Passat. There doesn't seem to be a big difference between it and the Superb, and given I wanted an option laden model, the Passat seemed more reasonable on price when used. I particularly liked the R Line spec and there's a few engine options too.

In the end I just went overboard on size and bought a Vito....

Give the AMG Line Premium a miss. Its slightly older. The other's you linked can have native car play / android auto enabled. Also not sure every these got the 9 speed box the older one may be the 7.

What age range and running costs are you happy with. 20k will get you a massage range of cars, from a nearly new small engined insignia to an e60 M5 touring (I know it said no 5 series in op).

Would you consider an SUV, if loading dogs is the issue most higher end cars with air ride will kneel down.

Not always an obvious one but the Mk7 Golf Estate has a huge boot. 605 litres which is actually 35 litres more than the current 5 series I think (570 litres). Also the W212 previous gen E Class estate was 640 litres so also not massively up on boot capacity either.

I had Golf R Estate from 2016 to 2018 and it was a great car. Would happily have another. The 2017-2018 models are worth seeking out as they come with extra standard kit and are pre-GPF.

Alternatively, a Golf GTD estate could be worth a shout if you need a diesel. Examples of each below:

The Leon Cupra Estate is also worth considering as it is marginally cheaper than a Golf Estate but still has large boot as well. Again, I had one of these but it does have a slightly sloped boot which makes it a little less practical than the Golf.
