Just checked my licence for something and found out it expired (Sec 4a) back in August. I'll be 70 next Feb, the licence was only renewed in August 2016, so I'd assumed it would expire on my 70th.

DVLA online response wasn't too clear to me - it claimed I'm entitled to drive until the date in section 11 (my 70th), "even if you need to renew your driving licence with a new photograph" then went on to say it's an offense to drive with an expired photocard.

Wondering if anyone has had similar and if it's worth applying for a new one for 3 months until I'll need to reapply for my 70th

They last 10 years though I suspect there are thousands driving without realising theirs has expired.

Not a particular issue, I dare say, unless yiou want to hire a car on holiday or something.

Did you provide a new photograph in 2016, or did they use your passport photo? Perhaps the photo start date wasn't 'reset' so the 10 year validity had partially passed? Is the photo expiry date the same as the previous licence?

Not sure which photo was used back then tbh, but reckon you're on right track there.

Thanks for replies - hopefully that renewal will arrive soon and I'll apply with that.

If you have an active passport, they will automatically use the image the passport office has at driving licence, with no action needed on your part. As you know, 3 year renewal after 70 (or with a ‘medical’ licence), again automatically using a passport image if you have a passport.

I've noticed this when I renewed my own licence - the DVSA renew from the date they receive the application NOT the date of expiry of the old licence.... so you need to try and leave renewal until the last moment before your licence expires to maximise the length of entitlement. It's not a good system IMHO
