Plastic bricks to play well potentially technicaly

Hello,

What are alternatives to Lego that may or may not be 100% compatible? Are there any kits/suppliers that are recommended? I am thinking bricks, cogs, motors and sensors.

I already have Lego and would like to try something as an alternative.

Been around for years, never heard/ seen a bad review anywhere.
