Saved up and bought my dream car - a 68 plate Aston Martin Vantage.

Took delivery and within 24 hours and under 100 miles the MIL comes on and car starts misfiring significantly.

I also checked the MOT for the car and it had an MOT advisory on both rear tyres - checking them they barely had 3mm tread. When challenged about it the garage says its within the "timeless" limit for allowing a car to leave the showroom.

Its now back in the AM dealer garage for investigation.

Heart says I give them a chance to fix
Head says reject and run

thoughts?

Don't let your mother-in-law anywhere near it.

Vanquish S (gen2) 18mths ago.

Timeless tolerances were worryingly poor, i was awarded a full refund on my timeless check, multiple oversights and poor judgement in general, glad i never had to claim on the warranty (which necessitated the check)

I consider myself very lucky to have gotten into Aston ownership but even luckier to have gotten out of it so quickly (5months) financially up.

Most overrated cars made imo, the competition is leagues ahead.

It’s funny how when you take such a car in for service they put a marker on the tyres having 6mm, brake pads 30% worn and you’ve done more than 10,000 miles so need a rebuild. Until they sell it to you and then all of that is not important.
I wouldn’t be happy buying a car with 3mm of tread particularly as we go into winter. That’s another £1k spend within a couple of months.

If it’s any consolation, my mate bought an ex demo DB11 with 1000 miles on it and it’s never away from the workshop. He quite likes their E220d courtesy car though.

Sounds like a bit of bad luck - my vote would be to give them a chance to resolve the misfire and have a sensible conversation re the tyres (3mm is legal?). Should have been raised prior to sale and factored into the deal maybe?

For a bit of balance this is not my experience of the brand, mine is entirely positive and has been for 6 or 7 years now albeit my issues have been few and minor (2014 vantage).

They’re great cars and whilst it’s disappointing to experience a problem so soon it would be a shame for you to miss out on your dream car?

I love Astons but having been privileged to own 2 I struggle to convince myself to own a third.

My first one - a new 2013 vantage coupe bought new had some paint issues, the boot never fitted properly scuffing to paint off the bottom edge and it needed a top end rebuild after 1000 miles due to an oil leak.

Traded that 10 months later for a new convertible. That needed a new hood within weeks as the original hadn’t been fitted properly and ripped. Then got the corrosion on the rear wings and doors. Traded for a Porsche.

A friend had a new version Aston which broke down on the way home from the dealer and again within 5 miles of return having been fixed. He rejected it.

I would love to think that the quality has improved and looked again at a vantage convertible recently as I love them but couldn’t get past my concerns.

On the rejection point - I would without hesitation on the basis of the breakdown. The prep seems lacking so what faith do you have that they’ll sort it. Plus the experience is probably spoilt.

We wouldn't sell a £3K car with 3mm tread, we don't actually sell anything with advisories.
Pretty poor of an Aston dealer knowing full well a pair of premium tyres is going to be circa £500..

Thanks guys - the car needed a new set of injection coils so we rejected it.

The dealer principle was extremely apologetic and reading in his tone pretty miffed at his staff. now negotiating on another car.

Another Aston / Vantage?

Good result if you’ve found another car, hope it works out as if you get a good one you’ll love it!

Just seen this thread, it will be the rubber boot that has allowed water down to the spark plug, hence the misfire. There is a valley on the engine and the coil packs are essentially the lowest point.

Mercedes redesigned the boot soon after production started to prevent ingress. AM M177's still had the older design until 2019 I believe.

The cars don't need new coil packs, but just new boots and spark plugs really if they have a misfire. This is the 3rd car I know of with this issue.

I suspect frequent use should minimise problems.

Other than the styling looking nice (which you only benefit from when not actually in the car) I don't see the attraction of the brand.
