Speed matters: Rant.
Discussion
Speed matters.
Of course it does. If we had no speed, modern life would collapse. Society needs speed. Without it, things would get lower paced, nothing good would happen in our lifetimes.
Speed matters.
So, that 4.5 minutes doesn't matter eh? this is "time saved" according to a Research Numpty, on an average journey, by speeding. Well excuse me ! 9 minutes a day, that's 45 a week, and a couple of hours a month. Multiply that by EVERYONE, then by the average hourly rate, and I think you must agree that Speed saves money. Lots of it.
Speed matters.
Hmmm. Tried this one today, I sat in the Left lane on the M25. You go into a little cocoon world of 45-55mph dreaminess. Then I had to change lane in this soporific state. Nightmare. We need speed to keep us awake. Speed promotes safer driving!
Speed matters.
Apparently if I drive at 30mph round town, I am a good driver. What rubbish. I was driving, struggling to stick to the limit, and spent so much time looking at the speedo because of Gatso Paranoia, that I failed to see the Police car OVERTAKING head on to me. Complete with blue lights. Yep, you guessed it, my momentary inattention to the road made me dangerous. Stop worrying about 5 or 10mph, concentrate on the real issues!
Speed matters.
My car thrives on motorways. It is an aerodynamic blob that consumes diesel. It does 50mpg at 80mph. So let us stop the madness, raise the limit. It costs me more in TIME to go slow, than it costs in FUEL to go faster. More fuel = more tax, so the Govmnt are laughing. Raise the limits!
Speed matters.
Because it can be fun as well. We all live dull stressed out lives, and sometimes a blast in the motor can make you feel sane again. Do they really want to take this away from us? Most Road Rage incidents are low speed affairs. Well get the roads moving faster, and there will be less road rage. Promise! And think of the money saved.
Speed matters.
If you care for the earth, you'll realise that grid locked roads cause more pollution. Regulate the traffic, keep it running fast. That way we avoid needless pollution. Ban speed humps, chicanes and atsos. Every bump wears out shock absorbers, increasing stopping distance when you may actually need it. Gatsos have failed, and cause accidents, and who even beleives the hype anymore?
Speed matters.
This one is for you, fellow Piston Head. Sometimes you got to make a stand, and this is probably ours. Don't let us see a grim future of blanket 20mph, because the chiluns & bunnies don't know how to cross the road. Fight the hypocracy of filthy polluting public transport. Drive as fast as you can, if only to increase the 85th percentile.
regards, Carl.

My mum made the best comment I've ever heard her say the other day! (she drives a 1.0 Vauxhall Corsa, great little car)
I quote!
"Ooooohhhh come on this is ridiculous! The left lane should be limited to 60mph for all the grannies onthe road who don't like speeding, middle lane up to 80mph and outside to 100 or 110!"
My face was like
WOW, go mum!
What do you lot think?? Do you agree with my mum?

Damn right Carl, I agree with everything you said there. I'd recently found myself driving too fast everywhere and starting to worry about getting caught, so for the last 500 or so miles I've been experimenting with keeping to the speed limit in NSL B roads and dual carriageway (I don't break the limits in urban areas) on my daily commute.
What did I find?
- I was less attentive and observent - I was as you say cocooned and sleepy at 60/70mph. I found myself indicating less, and not looking as far ahead up the road.
- I was bullied by other road users for doing only 70, and rightly so. At that speed, overtaking two lorries which are driving nose to tail takes a considerable amount of time. I'd be blocking the overtaking lane whilst cars of all size and type would queue up behind me impatiently.
- My fuel economy over two tanks reduced from 35mpg to 32mpg!
The reason behind my poor fuel economy is this: It is simply not possibly to do this speed without just sitting on the bumper of the slowest moving vehicle on the road at the time, or frequently having to accellerate to 70/80 to get past convoys of slow moving vehicles without being rammed off the road by the people who want to get a move on.
Well sod that, I'm now back to cruising at 80 with occasional bursts into three figures when I get the urge and conditions allow. I pay full attention to what's going on around myself, I predict what other road users are going to do before they do it and I don't piss anyone off whilst I'm doing it. And I believe that makes me a better person to share the road with.
I'm not sure of the go faster, get there quicker, idea in urban situations. I find that things like traffic lights and stupid bus lanes cause me to be so slow I'd have been faster off cycling. I only speed for fun in these situations.
However cross country (especially B and A roads) then you really can cut huge chunks out of your journey time by putting the pedal to the metal.
A mate and I travelled to Manchester for a mountain bike show one year from Glasgow. We only stopped for fuel once and made the journey in about 3 and a half hours. Mostly at a ton up on desertaed motorways.
Yup speed matters

That was stopping for petrol twice and taking a leak
Cardiff to Yeovil (103 miles I think) in 58 minutes.
It was a very ocurrence to get a clear run down the motorway and bear in mind that the last 35 miles is done on twisty B roads.
Those who know the area know what I'm on about...

I was in a Merc C220. Perfect down the motorway but a bit 'roly-poly' to say the least.
And by the time I got Charlton Mackerall the brakes were a bit 'vague'...
