Boxster Market - Bottomed out?

Have an early 987 boxster, which i refresh the WBAC value on every so often...

Interesting to see how quickly its dropped over the last year from £7k to £4.5k, with a predictable sharp drop over the last couple of months

This slightly reminds me of the time you could get a half decent 944 for £2500, back in the early nineties

So my question to the floor is - Have boxster values bottomed out, or will the market likely continue to drop?

Are there any app/site that shows average asking prices over time? Be good if there was the equivalent of Land Registry sold prices for motors.

987s will still go down over time. It wasn't that long ago you could buy 986 from £3k. There are still some out there at that sort of price but you'd need your eyes and toolkit open.

And shortly after your wallet open once you get bitten with IMS, Clutch, RMS and bore score issues.

Early 986s don't really have the IMS or bore score issues. I've had 2, an early 3.2s and a 2.7, no real issues other than part prices are The former did have a slightly weepy RMS, but it had over 80k miles on it.

I wouldn't say a clutch is an issue but at high mileage especially a sports car it's a consumable. I'm on my 2nd 986 and they've done a combined 195k. The point being if you buy at the bottom of the market you have to be ready to deal with some maintenance items which won't have been attended to.

I did a clutch in my 2.5 Boxster this afternoon in my garage, about 5 hours start to finish and that was not rushing. Such an easy job, you don't even need to drop the gearbox oil, just make sure you've got a new exhaust fitting kit too!

The clutch comment was related to the IMS failure - this can damage the clutch and flywheel

i had to have the full lt replaced

Great great little sports cars but go in eyes open and perhaps have a specialist inspection if you want to avoid tears at bedtime

Since the IMS bearing is bolted to the rear of the engine, effectively forming part of the bell housing, it can easily damage the clutch & flywheel. The chances of that happening in the scheme of things are low, as is getting a bore scored car. These are design flaws but sore owners who've been unlucky are just that - unlucky. The chances are it won't happen to you.

I wouldn’t view WBAC as a reasonable barometer of the Boxster market. They don’t like older stuff like that anyway and I can’t see them rushing to offer on one on mid-November.

In the last 4 years my 987 has gone from £4.5k (what bought it for) to £2.5k to £7.5k. Not checked for a while as I’m not rushing to sell and I can’t be arsed with all their text and email follow ups.

Maybe look at Motorway if you genuinely want to sell.

How are AT and eBay prices faring?

I think good cars at the top of the market are the best buy. But that's just me. I've had my 986 since Jul 21. Pics from the day I bought it.

As I mentioned on a readers rides thread over the weekend, I've been keeping half an eye open on 986s which inevitably creeps up to start seeing bottom end 987s come into the picture. There seems to be the odd one for about £5k at the minute but they look rough/are cat cars.

I dont know if the 986 market has bottomed specifically or the general rise in prices across the board has lifted all boats. It would be nice to think that after 10 years or more of Porsche fans saying 986 prices will eventually rise we are in fact there. The truth is these cars have always been cheap and if you buy a nice one and then spend money looking after it properly you will never get back what you have spent. So trying to make money here is a fools game unless you are playing in the mid market and keeping your spend low. So buying low, doing some small jobs yourself if really really necessary and then selling high might make you some profit but I doubt it and it really depends how you value your time. I didn't buy a 986 to make money so I dont expect to. If its value goes up or down by 2 or 3 thousand it wont really affect Me unless I choose to sell. I am trying not to think about selling because it took me 4 or 5 years to take the plunge and I spent a lot of time looking at for sale ads in that time. Now I dont need to look at them because I have my 986.

A mate of mine had his RRD on WBAC for a few months and we used to joke about it being like the stock exchange with the value changing on it weekly, one week up one week down. At the time I had a 25 year old ST205 Celica GT4 I put it on WBAC for a valuation and they came back with £500. I sold it for £9k shortly after

I know some will want the answer to the "had the market bottomed out" to be "no" as they own one and want to keep the value. I'm firmly in the "I hope so" camp as I nearly got hold of one when the prices were low and I'm hoping for a other shot, I'd love a £3k early 2.5
