The story goes in May I saw a 2018 GTD advertised near to me with higher mileage (94500 miles to be precise). Every week there was a new issue. I had an eml on since the day I got it (didn’t do it on the test drive). The trader attempted to repair many times but didn’t rectify it so I took it to a specialist and it turned out they had fitted the wrong part (in fairness the dealer paid my bill form the specialist).
One day I went to open the bonnet and it would not release. £266 later it was back to full working order. The next week the airconditioning decided it had enough and needed condenser at a cost of £600 (didn’t replace it in the end).
I also checked the oil in the car a few days prior to it flashing up on the dash low oil and the oil being on minimum. The oil was on full a few days before. This was then followed by the car hesitating as I pulled away and a slight squeal from the turbo.
This was the final straw and I let it go a few days later making a £3000 loss. It was just an unlucky car for me which was a shame. It was sold in September and I still don’t have my own car but have use of one.
So after this nightmare, I still find myself really wanting to get another GTD. I want to do it slightly differently and buy a low mileage car. I keep seeing ones with 70k on them for between £16000-£16500 and I am really tempted to go out and buy another.
I had always wanted one for years and miss all the kit mine had. I know it’s not everyone idea of a good fun car but I really enjoyed driving it and most things about it. For me, I cannot see anything on the market that beats it.
Am I daft for wanting another one ?

It can happen with any car, 90000 miles is nothing really if it’s been serviced well so I think you were just unlucky with that one.
Check it’s been serviced on time and you can’t do anything else really, the only thing that concerns me with some cars is the mileage between the services.
Maybe consider a petrol if you don’t do a lot of mileage.

We might just be unlucky too but modern VWs definitely don't seem anywhere near as reliable as the reputation suggests. As a family we had good experiences up until around 2005 with the last really good car being a Passat Estate with the pd130 engine that reliably ran to 200k miles.
Since then, they've all been fairly disasterous. A Caravelle with sliding doors that kept falling off and then needed 2 new engines and a new gearbox was the worst I think followed by a Polo that was burning almost as much oil as petrol with only 60k miles on the clock.
Wouldn't have another now - Toyota, Honda, Mercedes and even Porsche have proven much, much more reliable.

Don't think another would be anymore reliable, at least you missed out on cambelt failure, headlight or modules failing and AFS warnings on the dashboard, oh and knackered shock absorbers.
I'm assuming £600 was for a genuine part, normally they are cheaper than that even if they have the newer gas, although the compressors fail on them too.

Think you were just unlucky. I've got a MK6 GT TDI coming up to 126k miles (had it since 42k!) and reliability has been very good to date. Always serviced annually/10k miles. I've used V-Power for the vast majority of the time I've had it, though I feel it at the pumps with the current prices.
As I said in the other thread, going to £18.5k or so will get you something with less than 30k miles. Manuals are a better bet than DSG for reliability.
