Door Mirror Repairable ?

Wow, and there was I searching when the srach facility was down, as it is now, and lo & behold, both here & tvrcc have recent threads on same issue.
Yesterday our driver's side one just fell flacidly face down to reveal the tarmac reflected in the glass. There were two other small 7mm long screws just wedged into the gap between the collar and the neck it is secured to,for God's sake... call this 'engineering'?! And if they're the same mirrors as on a Citroen XM, I bet the frecnh do NOT do it that way...
Took me 4 hours fannying today before I said sod this, and got some araldite and sorted the darned thing. Have done over 100 miles this eve and it's solid as a rock. It's the bloomin grub screw in the collar wot had originally loosened and after hours trying to file a 3mm allen key so it'd fit the hole to tighten at right angles, I gave up with aching back. So now, the collar has been glued onto the neck, or whatever it's called, the ally one. Am sure it will break off if I clobber someone with it.
Guys, how hard WOULD it have been for me to remove the door panels and undo the ally neck from inside the car ( after all, is that not The Proper Way? ) , then tighten the grub screw so the collar is secure, refit the neck and replace all door innards without leaving summat rattling or fluff flying around and me forever cursing?

Hi, no advantage gaining access to the inside of the door, as the lower collar is screwed into a threaded boss which is bonded into the door skin !
Trick is to unwind the hole mirror so you can lift the plastic collar and tweak the grub screw.
Then rewind the mirror unit tight and hope the mirror is in the correct place.
