Security Cameras in Manhattan - Following London

I wonder why the libertarians are so much against this. What "privacy" is expected in a very public place? I am open to opinions on this as I have not formed one yet.

I've not really got a problem with cctv, to a degree. But I can't see how it will aid security, and sfety, as it would only ever be used after the fact. To catch theives, shoplifters, etc, then I can see the point, but to use London as an excuse, then it seems a bit like bolting the stable door after the horses have gone and blown themselves up.

Not necessarily. Case in point was recent cock-up by the terrorists in London - thanks to CCTV we managed to track down the perps and infiltrate the group, very likely preventing future attacks.

Intelligence can only do so much, and CCTV can be a great practical help at eliminating future occurences of an event.
