Hi all,

has anyone sold a car privately worth 22k or more? I have listed mine on auto trader which didn't receive a single call considering it was 1k under market value.

I know most people don't have the cash or don't want to buy private hence asking if anyone has walked to you paying 22k of cash for your car

22k is a lot for people right now and the fact you cant offer them PPC means your going to be overlooked by most folk on Autotrader. I would suggest posting the car on social media as well, as long as you can deal with the tire kickers. The highest I sold a car privately was at £15.

What car are you selling?

Sold my car privately for pretty much that money two months back. Advertised here on PH, as it was an enthusiasts' car.
Bank transfer from buyers' online banking in two chunks, no issues.

There are still people around with money to spend on something they really want, not as many as there were but still some. Therefore some of the cars advertised will sell, not all of them, only the best value ones (ie cheap for the condition, age, mileage and spec) will move.

I have a view that looking at asking prices of existing ads gives a slight over-estimate of where the market is, since the ads that you see are the ones that no-one has wanted to buy yet, if you see what I mean.

Time of year, current economic climate, how the advert was written, is the car right for the typical auto trader buyer, pictures good enough, any issues with the car putting people off, where are you located, is it the right colour? Could be a whole host of things. It is a lot of cash to be parting with right now to be honest and that could be an issue.

I'll hopefully soon be spending a smidge over your price and won't be looking at private sellers for no other reason that using a dealer has more security for me.

I've bought privately in the past and would again, just not at that value.

FWIW there are cars being privately advertised and sold on AT at £75k, £100k plus every week, so it's by no means impossible to sell a high value car privately.
(I know of a specific car that went privately for over £70k just last week, and plenty of other private ads that pop up and disappear from AT, most of which will have been sold).

The pool of buyers is smaller for a private sale at higher values, but the buyers are out there, if you have what they want for an attractive price.

^^^ This many manage to sell at well over that price. I,m looking now and have noted a couple of private sales, problem IMO with private sales is they want same the same money as the MD.

If cars don’t sell at “1k under market value”, then, ipso facto, that is not the market value.

My car's been on AutoTrader & eBay for almost 2 months... 5 offers, all cheeky. It's the cheapest in the country!

It's going to Motorway next week.
