powerbook + wireless cable modem help
Discussion
Hi, a friend of mine has changed his broadband from bt to ntl cable and since doing so he cant use his airport wireless connection. I believe its to do with adsl??? and cable but neither of us are techies. it works fine if you straight plug it straight in. is there anyway to make it wireless again. please keep it simple as im a dumb arse on this kidda stuff, cheers Andy
ps the power book is a g4 1.33ghz

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with airports but don't NTL give you one of their small grey boxes? Basically, the connection on the back of that will be Ethernet network, not an ADSL phone line (allthough the plug will fit it won't work). You need to find out if the airport has a cat5/rj45/ehternet facility, and use an appropriate cat5/rj45 cable to connect the two.
I might be missing something critical about an airport here, but I think thats most likley the problem.

The power book works fine if you connect directly to the modem, but it doesnt allow his wireless airpot to work. He has a built in airport card and a plug in apple airport transmitter that was connected to to his bt broadband. I think the problem is that the bt worked though a phone line and it had a signal that could be transmitted, where as the signal from the cable modem cant. I was wondering if theres a way round this. ie would a wireless router work instead of the air port?????
Hi,
I am typing this though an NTL cable modem connected to an Airport extreme base station, then connected to my iMac - I also use it with my now very geriatric iBook running classic OS9 with an internal airport card - so it can be done and it is not too dificult. I am not sure form your description if the problem is that you cannot connect to the airport, or that the airport cannot connect to the internet.
First off, I assume you have an airport base station (a round white UFO shaped thing), what lights are on that? The centre one should be constantly lit and the two on the left and the right should light occasionally, when there is either upstream or downstream traffic.
Depending on which version of Mac OS you are using you should be able to open either the airport control panel (OS 9 or classic) or the internet connection application (OS X). Can you see the airport still and if so what does it say about your connection? If you can see this launch the airport admin tool and check the internet settings are set correctly (connect via ethernet and configure using DHCP)
What lights do you have on the cable modem? You should have power, cable and PC (or the equivalent) lit , again with the 'data light flashing occasionally when there is traffic. As you can connect from he laptop diectly, I am going to guess that the power and cable lights at least are on, but if not cylce the power and then put your life on hold for a day and ring NTL. It is worth checking the cable, you will need and RJ-45 cable, non-crossover, but as you are connecting directly with your laptop (I assume via ethernet, my modem also has a USB connection) then it should be OK.
I did not have too much difficulty setting it up, but you may find that you need to cycle the power of either the base station or the modem (usually the modem) a few times - not sure why but they seem to get out of synch. occasionally.
Cheers,
Steve
