I do like the Abarth 595s and the new 500e is a lovely bit of work. Now they've been combined. I love that paint choice.

I think the only question I would have is one of sound. Part of the fun of the 595 was the stupid sounds it made. They have fitted a sound generator, I have not yet heard a sound generator that didn't sound like Gran Turismo games. That is to say, awful. So will be interested to hear that when it comes.

Other than that....

150 BHP, 173 lb-ft of torque and the 42 kWH battery. 18 inch 205 section wheels as well. 0-60 in 7 seconds which I think is perhaps a tad too slow. I think a time in the 6's would have been more like it, but I am sure it will feel fast anyway. And of course, it gives them some headroom for more powerful models should it prove popular (I believe the original 500 abarth was only 140HP, later changing to the 595 with 160 and again 180 with the S4 competizione versions and 695 versions).

How can the claim 0-60 in 7sec is 'best in class' when the BMW I3S dies it in 6.7sec. I was hoping the Abarth would be a replacement for my I3S but its not much use changing to it when its slower and has no more range the the I3S.

I guess in someway, they'll be able to claim the i3S isn't in the same class. Also, i3 is no longer made right? so technically, its not there to compare to.

I do agree it's a bit too "warm hatch" rather than "hot hatch". Can't argue with the paint job though!

The fact that it’s not yet another 2,700kg EV is worth praise on its own. It’s also unusual in the land of EVs that it looks good and is compact. I think it’s a bit small for my needs but if it drives like the petrol powered Abarth it’d be a bit of fun. The colour is great also. An actual colour no less.

It's a dinky little hatchback city car with a small battery and limited range based on Fiats most popular car, they were hardly going to release a 5m long, premium, family SUV?

A quick look would suggest It weighs somewhere in the region of 1500KG, which I think is piss poor TBH. The i3 with a similar battery weighed 200Kg less and the much larger Model 3 RWD is only 200KG more.

Just looks like another lazy, heavy, shared platform car akin to the Mini electric IMHO. £35-40k? Pull the other one..

two things

BMW gave up producing the i3 due to its significant build costs and chose not to do a like for like replacement.

Secondly what other car is currently sharing the 500e platform

Btw I’ve had a i3 (drove 80k miles in it) and now have a 500e.

I loved the i3 but tbh the 500e is nearly as fun and cost the same.

Hopefully the Abarth will turn that fun up a couple of notches as well

I doubt anyone could tell that a 7 sec car was any slower than a 6.7 sec car.

It still means you are second to arrive at the next set of traffic lights and you are being overtaken at a track day rather than doing the overtaking.

Seriously though I like the 500e and i was eagerly awaiting Abarth to get their hands on it . Its small and not too heavy which is all good but as already said it's only a warm hatch. The Smart #1 Brabus is going to be available in the same timescale and that is a proper hot hatch, although a bit lardy.

disappointed with the Abarth
and the Smart #1 has a grumpy face
I'm seriously running out of time if old Khan / TFlLhave their way
front runner for me is the Alpine E5.

I feel I need to jump to the Mini’s defence here. It may share its platform with its ICE equivalents but it’s as quick as the Abarth, more powerful, nicely screwed together and surprisingly good fun. And quite a lot cheaper than the Abarth will be too.

I bet the Abarth will be a lot of fun too, but we still seem a long way away from proper EV hot hatches. Maybe it’ll be the Alpine 5 that gets there first?

Have to agree having driving various newer MINIs over the years, it drives really well. The fact it's only 100Kg heavier than the petrol Cooper S is probably the reason.

I wouldn't call it lazy using the i3 drivetrain, it just made sense, but the F56 has been out for ~8 years now on it's 2nd LCI!

Yes, the mini’s getting long in the tooth, but until the Abarth 500e arrives it doesn’t have any direct electric rivals. I thought I might swap it for the Abarth but I think I’ll wait another year or two to see if anything a bit livelier turns up
