I’ve got an Oyster Perpetual Datejust, 6 years old. I’ve noticed that occasionally when I shake my hand/wrist I can feel a short buzz like something in the winding mechanism is releasing. I would like to think it is captured energy being imparted to the winder (a good thing) rather than the winding mechanism unwinding quickly (a bad thing).

The watch is working perfectly so I’m not overly concerned. It may have always done the buzz thing, and maybe I’m only just noticing it now. However, I would welcome reassurance that it’s fine….or not!

I know exactly what you mean and it's a very weird and distinct sound! Assuming this is the previous caliber 3135 we're talking about:

It's caused by the reversers sticking. This can be from dirt/contamination or it can be, amazingly, because of magnetism. It's often accompanied by a worn rotor axle.

If you have a friendly watchmaker I'd ask him to demangetise it and see if it goes away.

If it doesn't, at best it'll need a partial service and clean of the reversers, & maybe a new axle if you've caught it early. But if the rotor axle has started to disintegrate or the rotor has been rubbing against the plates or caseback it will need a service.

You mention it buzzing which suggests to me that the rotor is hitting something, which you definitely want investigated. If it's a "whirr" it's usually just the rotor unwinding as the reversers stick and the mainspring unwinds through the rotor. But if the rotor is hitting the movement it can only get worse and start rubbing on metal, eventually wearing through the plating which goes everywhere.

So yeah. If you've caught it early it's almost a non-issue. If it's been happening for a long time it might need a service pretty quickly!
