How to get to south of France
Discussion
Hi,
My girlfriend has a flat in Cannes and we thought it would be cool if instead of flying we could drive down this year and drive around monte carlo and then maybe pop over to Italy.. The only prob is it works out at a stupid amount on fuel/tyres/servicing needs to do the 1500 mile trip to get there.
Does anyone know if there is a train that you can get like the eurotunnel but continues further south and i can keep the car on that for as long as possible.. ??
Otherwise the £80 return easyjet flights are gonna be the only option as im not paying 1k just to drive down!
Thanks

Don't know anything about trains and yes it is expensive to take the car over on the ferry.
However, as Bogie said those French roads are some of the best in the world, especially for the elise. 1500 miles is only 40 gallon! (£180).
If the practicality of the situation really makes it a no-no then so be it, but if you can somehow manage it I'm sure you won't regret.
Having spent two weeks touring France in the Elise, I long to return to those billiard smooth back roads, and drive down the Mulsanne before hanging a right into La Sarthe. Just be careful as you approach the chicane at the top, they allow people to come the other way!!
Make the journey part of the trip, there are some fantastic B&B's in France and they cost next to nothing. Try Alistair Sawdays Special Places to Stay you'll find it on the web. Take a couple of days over the trip and turn a break into the holiday of a lifetime! If you don't speak the lingo don't worry, use a free translater on the web to translate your e-mails. Worked a treat for us.
Trust me on this.
Regards, Neil

You could take the Motorail down to the South of France and then hoon around the Alps, Monte Carlo, Route Napoleon etc. To be honest though, it's bloody expensive and probably only slightly cheaper than the wear and tear on a quick autoroute blast.
Just make sure you don't miss the Route Napoleon. Grenoble, all the way to Cannes - absolutely magic.

Thanks for all your replies guys, i knew i would get the answers i was looking for on here, in particular Neil's reply.
This was one of the reasons i bought the elise and knew that France had some good roads and always wanted to go to Italy, just thought if I can start half way down France it might be worth it.
Just didnt know if i wanted to put so many miles on the car, but then i guess it is there to be used.
Will pass this onto my GF and she will prob say lets go as she loves going anywhere in the car.
Should be going in next few weeks so will post some pics of the trip!
Thanks again.

Mate - get out there in it - 1500 miles across Europe is far better than 5K miles on our roads !
Have you tried the Chunnel on-line booking ? they sometimes have some cheap deals for very early crossings .......

Damn straight. Check this thread and you'll see Towman has literally just booked a crossing for less than £47 including breakdown cover. Not bad.

...yes - I love the roads....been 2x so far this year - once on the annual pilgramage to LeMans and just got back last week from France/Germany for 8 days in the Elise.....drove about 1500miles....so 1 copper...the roads are deserted outside of the cities.....use your imagination
clear skys, smooth clear roads, roof off...not a care in the world.......
thats it - Im off back next month

Do it - was offered a place on an Alps driving trip this year. Hesitated for a moment as I usually do when there's a big commitment, then realised it was exactly why I'd bought the car.
Went a fortnight ago and had such a great time - plot your route to include Ballon D'Alsace, Col D'Iseran, Col De Vars, Col De Cayolle, Col De Petit St Bernard for a start and you'll have a great time. If you do pop over to Italy, book a hotel for the night and do the Stelvio pass. You won't regret it

Agree, you'd be mad not to sieze the opportunity and drive. Plus there's still time to join the annual gathering of Lotus owners at Stelvio on the 13th of September. See http://stelvio.org.uk/ for links to various groups who are making the trip.

I just got back from a round trip from milton keyens to the south of france - its an 11hr drive at 85mph from calais.
We took a 4 litre x5 and all together it cost less than £550 including the £80 in toles
Its a great drive and id do it again, although the drive over the alps would be more fun!
