Inbetween car - options please

Looking at a 12-18 month wait on my new car order via work's salary sacrifice scheme.

My X5M is currently giving me 18mpg and I plan to sell it shortly and get an inbetween car to cover the next 12 months.

I have 2 options, up to £20k outright purchase or use 5.1% APR from bank to look at a PCP deal - but this would limit the car to be only up to 3yrs old (2019 onwards).

Requirements are:
- Value retention, something that will lose me as little as possible given it is an interim car
- Modern interior tech, something that is a nice place to be inside
- Reliable, don't want to be spending signficant money on upkeep
- Family car, 2+2 with some space needed
- Good economy - given the current car that would be around 35+ mpg

Desirables are:
- Something with warranty, stress free driving
- Fun to drive and not slow

Here's the thing you buy a Manufacturer backed warranty for (check the criteria before buying) most cars, this does include having an inspection/service carried out by the main dealer.

How many miles do you do in a year? It would probably be cheaper to just keep what you have, even with it's poor fuel economy.

The SQ5 is a very good pick the hard part is getting one with good spec & sensible mileage.

Can you not just keep your existing car? With your requirement, I can't think of anything that won't depreciate.

You will inevitably lose s few £grand in the trading process which covers a lot of fuel, if that's your concern with the existing car.
