Now I'm not a slave to use by dates but there are some things it's worth being careful with.

I've had this bacon in a sealed pack at the bottom of my fridge for about 10 days since it was delivered. The use by dates is tomorrow. It smalls fine, of nothing, but is the discolouration part of normal variation or a sign it's going off?

It's not from my regular supermarket deliverer but one where I've had prematurely bad food before, though some time ago, hence my slight concern.

That'll kill you to death even if you open it. Or maybe it'll just be fine.

If you're risk averse, triple wrap it and put it in the outdoor bin.

If you're a rampant risk taker, eat it raw.

If you're somewhere in the middle, just cook it and spit it out if it tastes funny.

Bacon is cured, with salt, the chances of it going off, in a sealed pack, in a fridge, are next to non existent!
I've had bacon, in a fridge, in an open packet for three weeks, there was nothing wrong with it!

Theres your answer. Its been stored safely and you are within the manufacturers use by date (which will allow for sub optimal storage).

Eat up.

Thanks for all the replies. I took it out of the fridge today, let it warm to room temp a little, after which it failed the sniff test.

You'd think, wouldn't you? But this was the first delivery I've had from this supermarket for some time (one at the upper price-bracket) because the last two times I had food which was off before its date, eg furry tomatoes and a Madras with a green section. So although I stored it safely I'd question whether they did.

As an ex supermarket customer delivery driver, I can assure you some don't.

Somewhat at a tangent but a local corner shop is rumoured to be turning off its freezers and chiller units overnight because of the cost of running them 24/7. yikes

I'm not surprised. This one picks the groceries from the store and the only time I've been there, the displays were well below the standard of other stores of the same company I'd been to. My main delivery store picks from a depot and once or twice fish has had a whiff of ammonia but everything else has been fine for years.

ETA it did look greyer today as well as the odour.

Whilst not 3 weeks, I regularly have an opened pack of bacon sat in the fridge for well over a week and past it's use by date, still alive to tell the tale after eating it.

Before I left the UK, I knew a few people who ate bacon raw, it didn't appear to do them any harm!
