I've won a bid on a mountain bike, I was hoping to pay cash on collection but the seller wants it all done via ebay (paypal) before collection. I'm fine with this as long as the bike is as described. If it isn't, is it fairly straightforwards to get my money back?

(sorry didn't know where best to post this, assumed Lounge was ok?)

You can always dispute the payment via Paypal, post collection, should you find something isn't right. Personally I'd be waiting until I'd seen it, if all was well, then do the payment via ebay/paypal in front of the seller.

Pretty standard to pay before collection. Make sure you check the collection in person option and it should generate a QR code that either party can sign to signify successful handover.

I’d assume that without a successful scan that either of you could cancel or reverse the transaction.

As for not paying before you go. If I was selling I wouldn’t be happy with you turning up unless you had paid first.

Thanks all

I assumed it would be similar to buying a car, you don't pay until you've seen it.

Oh, what would be the most cost effective and safe? Credit Card or Paypal (wary of PP fees, but is that subtracted from the final fee the seller receives?)

As i understand it

It's in your favour. For collection they should insist on cash as they have no proof of delivery.

I would never accept PayPal for collection as they can simply claim it back as no proof of shipping or delivery.

Not anymore. The purchaser now receives a QR code that the seller scans to confirm collection has been made to try and resolve this issue. May only work on the app though.

Thanks all, regarding paypal, who would pick up the fees, me or the seller? If me, then I'll use the credit card, unless advised otherwise!

It a bit unusual. Most sellers prefer cash on the day. (as then the buyer has virtually no comeback)

No paypal fees for a buyer.

I believe that the seller pays the paypal fees

Or eBay. Within the eBay managed payments the only fee the seller sees comes from eBay. (Not like the old days)

Paypal is pretty good, long as you don't pick 'friends and family' but 'goods and services'

No Paypal fees for buyer and none for seller as Ebay now pays direct to sellers bank account.

If OP is paying using PayPal via Ebay (which, if using PayPal that's the best route) he won't get that option thumbup
