I am looking for a cheap estate to ferry the greyhound around. It will be used for short/medium-length journeys. I am thinking petrol, reasonably reliable and plenty of room in the boot. I can pay 4-5k, but I would like to pay much less. I can't justify leasing a motor as I now work from home and make one 60-mile round trip to my workplace weekly. I also have a warm hatchback which does that duty fine, but my hound is far too large for a slightly longer journey. So, thinking of doubling up with a cheap estate.

Heart says I would like a Subaru Forester or a Volvo V70.
Head says something Japanese and cheap to fix and repair.

I would love to know your thoughts.

I'd say a 1.8 Insignia SRI is a great pick:

It's just one mattress away from being exactly where you love!

There are a plethora of Mazda 6's of similar age and price to the Insignia too. Not the latest model but the one before it which, if memory serves, is built using a lot of Ford Mondeo stuff so bits should be cheap and plentiful.

I too am looking at a similar car and budget, I am not near Birmingham so you are fine smile Wouldn't the number of owners put you off - 9 seems excessively high, also it has not MOT.

There seems to be a lack of supply or estates at this level (in the North east) - or people are moving away from Autotrader.

Mum & Dad have two Greyhounds. Their car is a VW Touran 7 seater. The floor space when the middle row is folded is supposedly the perfect shape and size for the dogs. It seems there are half decent examples out there from £1500.

Toyota Avensis 1.8. or Ford Mondeo 1.8.

That would be my shortlist.

I’ve had a 2008 VW Passat estate for about 10 years for family/dog/bike duties.

It’s needed nothing in 100k miles other than consumables.

Only reason I’m selling it (in the new year) is I no longer need a big car.

I’d recommend one!

I was looking for a similar car a few years ago, as my beagle nearly destroyed our daily. Ended up with a Golf mk4, 1.6 Petrol. Not an estate but to be honest its been great use. Only needs annual simple maintenance and MOT, simple 8v engine without AC no turbos or overcomplicated thingies..

I'm another looking for something at least equivalent of a Volvo 940 Estate.
Been thinking VW T5 , or Sharan, or Galaxy but wife says too big for her to drive.
She suggested (well someone she works with) suggested an Outback.
I'm half looking at V70 but they're smaller inside than the 940

I'm west coast Scotland so you guys are probably safe in Birmingham etc
I'm likely down in the NE (Washington) next weekend though.

As been mentioned Insignia estate petrol is a good shout I think, or if you want to go even cheaper, a late Vectra estate is humungous! Both way in budget, with cashback, very simple reliable cars.

It could be, but take the dog to try the boot height out. We have an one, and we also have a Dobe x. He has to crouch his head in it.

Do you have any photos - is this on top of the folded seats? I imagine they stand up in the middle, and the seats fold completely flat?

Yes, great tip. I have found that if you give him lots of space, like in the back of Merc R class with the seats down, he will wander about and be all over the place in the back. So, it's getting the right size of space and height right. I have also taken him on a short trip in the back of a Nisan Micra, and he was ok and just lied down and went to sleep.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I am waiting to complete a property that will drag now into the new year. So, I will be on the estate hunt in early 2023. They seem a slightly rare thing from my Autotrader searches.
