But surely this is the same for Discman etc users? They're blaming the iPod just because its very popular and lots of people use it.

?? Where did you get the 40% drop figure from? Apple stock is doing pretty well - I sold all of mine when they announced the Intel transition (on the basis that nobody would buy Powerbooks until the *much* faster Yonahs turn up) and have been proved badly wrong.
The concepts behind the iPod aren't rocket science, yet again it's the Apple industrial design that made it popular (and, of course, the marketing).

Apple have really dropped the ball lately with Tiger and all of its bugs.
Nobody needs to pay over the top prices for a smart looking machine anymore.
Why pay twice the cost for something that has a large amount of problems and has massive compatibility issues when you can get a PC that's looks at least as good, if not better in some cases and which costs less than half the price?.
I have always been a big fan of Mac's, especially when PC's looked very dull but can't really see any point in them beyond publishing at the moment.

Are you currently using their hardware and have run Panther for a while, and are currently using Tiger? My experience is that the system is the dog's bollox.
Tiger broke a few third party hack-type apps that mess with the UI, along with some kernel extensions (notably MS Virtual PC network switch) but, apart from the now-patched Dashboard exploit, has been not only stable but much faster on all of my Macs (5, from old stuff to brand new stuff).
They're still selling Powerbooks FFS, even though the Intel CPU replacement plan should have killed the market instantly. Looks like geeks aren't the main market and people still pay for a fully integrated design.
Yeah OS X is (IMO) very cool, but the extreme Linux fanboys and some MSers can point out big flaws in it. However, even with these flaws, people are still buying hardware that *massively* underperforms compared to similarly priced PC kit (apart from top-spec dual G5s)...

' Macs are still selling, then when they're using the same CPUs as Alienware et al, surely it's only going to get better? (unless they up the machines of course).
I just want 6 hours battery life and a top-speed P-M in my 12" Powerbook. That is all :dream-on:

There are some good points in there.
Mac's will continue to sell because if you ask a large proportion of the buyers about the chip swap you will get a blank look as they have no idea wtf you are talking about.
I know plenty of people who have boughts mac's on there looks alone.
At work we use different model Mac's. I'm a neutral as I realize that all of OS's have Pros and cons.
Why are you slating Mac's for been slow anyway?.
I think Apple has lost its way recently as Mac's don't offer any major advantage over PC's except they don't catch all of the Spyware/virus/trojan's I suppose.
One thing is for sure it will be interesting to watch the events over the next year or two.

Don't want to get into yet another OS argument, but I think what you've just posted is the biggest deal for Mr Average user without a reasonable amount of IT knowledge.
I use Macs, Linux boxes and Windows boxes. The Windows box takes more maintenance (patching) than the rest put together. I'm not anti-MS but it's easy for an ex-techie like me to understand the need to patch OS vulnerabilities and to block unused ports, etc.
For a home user without this tech knowledge, an unpatched Windows box on broadband quickly becomes a zombie or part of a botnet. I had the misfortune of installing W2k on a neighbour's PC a while back, and within 3 seconds of connecting to the internet on BT home broadband (to download patches) the machine was owned by automated hackers.
Current Mac systems avoid this, and given that Norton Internet Security Suite (essential for most MS boxes) costs £50, the Apple premium is worth it for many non-techies.
As to the speed thing... well I bought the dual 2.5 GHz G5 Mac as soon as it was announced. It's fast... and I love Macs... but stick a couple of Opterons under those monster water-cooled heatsinks in my G5 Powermac and I'll bet they're faster
(oh yeah, right now, as I post this, both CPUs are running at 85˚C and the memory controller is at 100.5˚C - these boxes are bouncing off the rev limiter

MP3 isnt entirely perfect a lot of the newer formats surpass it in both compression strength and audio quality (OGG, WMA, AAC, AC3, etc), and yes there are patent restrictions. I don't think its re-inventing the wheel as the newer formats are technically better, its more progression of technology. Confusing for us consumers though
