Need some help/info please on car hire, hope I’m in the right section. My daughter wants to hire a car, just a basic one from Fulham area for 10 days over Xmas to come down to the west country, it’s probably over 30yrs since I’ve hired one, mainly it’s the insurance that seems to be a minefield, any recommendations for companies to use and things to look out for regarding the insurance, she’s 29 had full no claims before selling her car a couple months ago and 3pts on her license, thanks

What insurance? When you hire a car it comes with the required insurance to drive it legally. Where you may choose to buy separate cover is for the huge excesses they have. Either they’ll sell you a stupidly priced in-house cover, or you buy your own, or you go without and hope you don’t crash, it gets stolen etc.

Pretty much all hire is very expensive now compared to prices from 3-4 years ago. I hired a car recently using this comparison site and got a reasonable deal. Got placed with one of the major global brands at half the price they were quoting me directly.

Www.rental cars.com

I bought annual cover for the excess via icarhireinsurance.com

I think during peak COVID a lot of hire companies started to sell off vast quantities of cars because they couldn't let them out. Now they are having to buy hods of new cars without the fleet discounts.

See www.karshare.com for cheap car hire, you actually rent someone else’s car.

How many people doing the journey? Renting from Sherbourne as apposed to Fulham seems to be about £30 cheaper per day (prices from CarRentals.com) Enterprise rentals. I’ve no experience renting through them.

Be careful, the cheapest may not work out that way in the end, read online reviews.

Make sure, she takes plenty of pictures of any damage on collection.

Hiring from Reading is significant cheaper than inner London, a Mini category car (not BINI) is around £40 per day.
