Which would you advise for someone wanting to spend circa £250 ?

Was looking at a Canon IXUS500, but not sure.

Plenty of choice of camera's around that price bracket!!. I'm looking for something similar at the moment to replace my finepix F401.

Have got my choice narrowed down to a Finepix Z1, Nikon Coolpix S1 or Sony T7. Have almost discounted the Sony though as the Zoom button is really fiddly compared to anything else i've tried.

I'm going to wait for a little while because in September Konica Minolta is launching the X1. Its very similar in looks to the Nikon S1. Has a 3x non protruding optical zoom although most importantly it has an 8 million pixel sensor as opposed to the 5m that seems to be the norm and Anti Shake (another minolta first in this market). All for a rrp of £300 meaning it should be available for about £250 mail order... I reckon it will be worth the wait!!

Probably right about waiting for the Minolta.

I've got a Finepix F610 compact, which delivers stunning quality for the size. Don't like the fact that it is taller than it is wide, but other than that I'm still really pleased with it, even though it is a couple of years old now.

If you're not worried about buying (slightly) used, I am about to upgrade to D-SLR and an selling my compacts

Olympus C50 Zoom
Canon S50 Zoom

Paid £250 + each for them less than 1yr ago, so am looking for sensible money, but still cheaper than buying new.

The canon s500/ixus500 offers no control of aperture - this is so stifling for creativity, and allows no growth with the camera - if that doesn't bother you then it's great. If it does, look elsehwere

Just been through this with the missus. Originally set on the Ixus 50, a bit of investigation found the Casio Exilim EX-Z750.

£249 at Jessops w/price match, 7.2 MP, and great reviews...none of which I can lay my hands on right now to link to, sorry!
