Has anybody else had this? If so, can you help?

A few weeks ago, I noticed a discenible clunk from the fron of the car - it felt as if it was the suspension as I could feel it through the steering wheel.

Went to dealer - but could not replicate the sound no matter how I try! now been 2 or 3 times, but still cannot replicate the sound, and (understandably) they seem to be getting fed up with me!

I have now managed to recreate the sound. If I am stationary and wiggle the steering wheel I get it - even more so when I am pressing the brake down.

Anybody else got this - and if so, how was it cured? At least if I can give the dealer somewhere specific to look, I may not look as stupid going in again!

Hi Mike

I had a similar clunking feedback & sound coming from my steering wheel. It happened mainly over bad roads or going over speed bumps.

I'll check the report tonight to see what the OPC did to fix it.

Forgot to add - the OPC says that they have checked the springs (the bolt at the top) and this was fine - this was their initial suspicion too, but proved to be wrong on this occassions. Is there any official term for a problem that arises and then can't be recreated when you go to the dealer (apart from damn annoying!!)

Sorry - forgot to add thanks to you all for replying so quickly!!

The OPC says ... well they might be right but I won't mention the numerous 'OPC says' that have turned out to be total b----x. Why not check the front springs anyway?

I thought there was one of these queries a few weeks back - does the 996 carry a jack & spare in the front? If so, try removing it & going for a drive. May sound a bit 'simple', but these things sometimes are.

Good luck

996`s sometimes suffer from the ball joints on the lower trailing arm or the coffin block transverse arm that goes back into the car. you would normally hear the noise if you push down on the offending wing with the car parked up. It can come and go though. Wait until you hear the noise, then pull over and push down on the wing.

Turbo - Good point - I spent the afternoon going through some of the other forums, and you are right - will get a 2nd /3rd/4th opinion. John - I have wiggled the tyre and it doesn't seem to move - but (another) good point - will remove it tonight and try again, but as it makes the noise when stationary, I had kind of ruled this out (but you never know!!!). Henry - sounds complicated! Will do though - might aswell try everything. However, when I am stuck in the middle of nowhere, with a flat tyr, nor spare and I am bouncing up and down on the wing of the car - what exactly do i tell the police

What I normally do is try and pull a fat bird, find a quite spot pop her over the wing of the car and hey presto. You`re listening for noises from the suspension but you don`t look odd. It get`s better still because you need to pop her round each corner of the car to check all the suspension, she thinks you`re a creative lover, tells her mates and hey presto, you`re the best lover in town.

Works for me every time.

On a more serious note if it happens when you turn the steering wheel lock to lock with the car stationary then it`s the springs and probably nothing odd.

There was an instance apparently at an OPC where they stripped down the front suspension on a turbo trying to find a clonk......it turned out to be 2 wine bottles clinking in the front luggage compartment.

Worth checking nothing is loose or rarrling around in the luggage compartment.

Tognola fixed my groaning front suspension yesterday.

As Henry-F says, it was the ball joints on the lower trailing arms. It comes and goes, but it was quite noticable for me last week.

Of course, when I tried to demonstrate it yesterday by pushing the front wing down the bloody thing wouldn't issue a peep!

Now nice and quiet, and a more pleasant ride.

Think that this may be the problem - was it expensive to fix?
