Daily driver, diesel or not, cheap or not...

Evening all
Circumstances have changed recently and I am now in the market for a 2nd car. I am doing more miles and now have a garage at my disposal.
Currently have a toyota GT86 as a one car does it all motor. However now I have garage space I can have less sensible toy and get something more boring and sensible for daily duties.
First choice is if Diesel is the way to go or not? prefer the drive of them in the models I have short listed but not sure if its kind of a dying breed that we are soon to be encouraged to get out of with more tax and higher pump prices....
Also I am unsure if to go cheap and cheerful or something slightly nicer...
Ds3 and corsa are the budget options 3k to 5k
BMW 320d estate and audi A3 saloon as the pricier choices circa 10-15k
Essentially something efficent, comfy and can fit a small dog and bike in is all I need.

Diesel isn't on the way out, just people are now choosing a car on their needs and usage, be around for decades yet, this pattern should of been years ago tbh, but many liked the VED incentives.
Get what matches your usage. I went for diesel for the past 15+ years, as was doing 25/30k a year (made financial sense) - now my work patterns changed and I am in a shed petrol doing 8k MAX a year roughly, and the odd big trip.
With the price of unleaded too at the moment, its pretty much averaging out in comparison.
Nice not having diesel on my friggin' hands everytime I fill up aswell, grrrrr small things hey

As someone has said diesel only really makes sense now if you are doing 12K miles or more a year with some long trips, otherwise it won't work out much cheaper to run and you risk DPF issues.
I had diesels when I was doing business mileage in the early 2000s so 14K+ miles a year, but when I stopped I went back to petrol.
Lucky really as my sister lives in a London Borough so will be inside the ULEZ next year!
