By coincidence, I happen to be reading Max Hastings' book on the raid - "Chastise".

A sad day. I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times and always a pleasure to be around.

This original large squadron photo has pride of place in my study, 617 squadron in 1947 on their goodwill tour to the USA. My great uncle served in 207 sq then joined 617 in feb 1945, he was a flight engineer and went on the grand slam/tall boy raids on the many Uboat pens, viaducts, battleship Lutzow and finally Heligoland. The fear and anxiety must have been horrific. He didn’t speak much about his experiences apart from he wouldn’t make friends with other crews as he’d often woken up to find empty beds where friends hadn’t returned from raids, the other being the grief of going on a raid on Germany on Christmas Eve and the thoughts of the children/families getting smashed beneath them.

Johnny Johnson, “What a Man” 👏

It irritates me how the word hero is so over used and so frivolously used today.

“Johnny Johnson was the real deal a “True Hero” in every way. Thanks to Johnny Johnson, his crew mates, along with every brave soul from the 617sqn & all those that fought for the freedoms we enjoy today, some having made the ultimate sacrifice. I thank you and I thank you all.
R.I.P 💔
