Ok, much as I would like to spend thousands on a Tag Heuer, Breitling or whatever, I can think of better ways to spend my money just now (like fixing my car).

However, as my old watch has just died on me I am looking for something to replace it. Budget is max £100 (how tight am I?) and it needs to be something outdoorsy but not overburdened with unnecessary features. I have looked at www.animal.co.uk and www.kahunaextreme.com so far, but any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Oh, and it needs to be waterproof.

As I always seem to suggest on threads like this

http://anyboard.net/rec/wusimages/posts/659.html

I went for the rubber strapped version as I find metal strapped watches rip the hairs off my arm.

I've got an 031 series metal bracelet from Animal, IMHO it looks good, is pretty much bombproof and cost me £84.
Their customer service is also fantastic, on a previous watch they replaced a bezel and glass very quickly, each time sending a little frreby in the post along with my repaired watch.

Do a search for a Taser watch or H3 as they are now called.
something gadget shop.co.uk sells them and the base one is under £100. Taser is a gas that glows for about 10yrs and is used on the hands and parts of the dial.

Swatch Scuba? I have expensive diving watches, but I've also had a Swatch Scuba for year. Water resistant to 200m and keeps good time. Not bad for £50 or so.

For a quality watch at a bargain price you can't get much better than a Poljot

£100?

That's easy - shop around and buy a new or nearly new Seiko Kinetic. No finer mass market watch for less than a the best part of a grand.

Anything else will be significantly inferior.

Hmmm, not so sure about that, I have had three of the damn things, they appear to last about 18 months to two years, then pack up. 1st I thought I was unlucky, bought another exactly the same model, but that died too. God knows why I bought a third, but it too died. I have a tub full of various Seikos from 1975 onwards, including early LED's and LCD's. They all work fine, but kinetic, all dead!

Isn't there some sort of issue with the capacitors in Kinetics that gives them a shorter than expected life? I have heard this complaint before about them, however cool the technology is.

IIRC replacement of the capacitor costs too much to make the watch economically servicable.

Don't have any great recommendations for you in that price bracket, though the CWC military new-old-stock watches are quite cool, though IIRC around the £300 mark for the automatic.

Really? I am very suprised - did you have early ones? The watch is supposed to have a power reserve of up to three years, and friends who have one swear by them.
